'A young woman's battle for acceptance in a male-dominated world; her misadventures in love; and her torturous journey to track down her real parents in Germany' Mail on Sunday Best New Fiction From childhood, Katherine knows she is different, and that her parents are not who they seem to be. But as she grows up and becomes a mathematician, she faces the most human of problems - who is she? What is the cost of love, and what is the cost of ambition? On her quest to conquer the Riemann hypothesis, the greatest unsolved mathematical problem of her time, she turns to a theorem with a mysterious history that holds both the lock and key to her identity, and to secrets long buried during World War II. Forced to confront some of the biggest events of the twentieth century and rethink everything she knows of herself, Katherine strives to take her place in the world of higher mathematics, reclaiming the voices of the women who came before her whose love of the language of numbers connects them across generations.

From the legendary editor who helped shape modern cookbook publishing-one of the food world's most admired figures-comes this evocative and inspiring memoir. Living in Paris after World War II, Jones broke free of bland American food and reveled in everyday French culinary delights. On returning to the States she published Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The rest is publishing and gastronomic history. A new world now opened up to Jones as she discovered, with her husband Evan, the delights of American food, publishing some of the premier culinary luminaries of the twentieth century: from Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher to Claudia Roden, Edna Lewis, and Lidia Bastianich. Here also are fifty of Jones's favorite recipes collected over a lifetime of cooking-each with its own story and special tips. The Tenth Muse is an absolutely charming memoir by a woman who was present at the creation of the American food revolution and played a pivotal role in shaping it.

Excerpt from The Tenth Muse It is plain enough that he loved country things, for a dozen books show it; but it is scarcely credible with what pure intensity this passion burned in him. The quietness of his writing, the irony, the acute wit, the never embarrassed penetration of his insight, the unexcitable strength of his mind, might mislead one into thinking him a man of cool tastes and desires. He was not. His physical qualities and appetites were powerful and fine; for all desirable physical as for all desirable spiritual things he simply hungered and thirsted; it was only his restraint and reserve that deceived. His physical presence itself was powerful and fine; his friends found him enviably handsome, although perhaps I ought to say that admiration never permitted me to think whether he was or was not. Nothing could be quieter than his eye, stiller than his body; at times his passiveness seemed indolent and complete. Yet he was the most restless of men, impatient of confinement, a wanderer who found his main delight in turning homeward, loving motion for its physical activity and for its perpetual freshening of the eye. He would go long distances for short visits, and use incredible care in order to spend an hour with a friend. In his desire of friends, again, the strength of his nature was shown. He had great capacities and great loyalties; the loss of a friend, if it unluckily occurred, through misunderstanding or the mere wryness of another's mind, hurt and oppressed him.
