An analytical and simulation study was conducted of an automatic system to control the terminal phase of rendezvous between two space vehicles. The system employs switching and thrust orientation criteria based upon relative-motion parameters first to establish a collision course and then to reduce the range and range rate to zero simultaneously. Techniques are developed for employing either modulated thrust or on-off thrust at a constant level. Results of the study indicate that the automatic system can effectively control rendezvous over a wide range of initial conditions and can utilize the available fuel in a very efficient manner.

A simulator study was made of presentations and control requirements for a manned astrovehicle employed in the interception of artificial satellites during the terminal phase of an orbital rendezvous of the satellite. The study was considered in terms of a manned interceptor having a home berth at a manned space station which is in circular orbit 500 miles above the earth. Interceptions were restricted to coplanar conditions and ranges of one-half mile. The results are believed to be generally applicable to conditions wherein the target is in the terminal area. Presentations which do not provide for attitude indications of the intercepting vehicle are not satisfactory. A direct-visual-observation presentation employing a screen, a projected star background, and a projected image of the target provided a feeling of "realism" in tracking and would be a satisfactory pilot-training aid. Use of longitudinal-translation and attitude controls alone is inadequate. Use of translation control alone, parallel and normal to the axis of the intercepting vehicle, is effective; the addition of attitude control enhanced the effectiveness, provided the control was used discriminately. Direct-visual-observation interceptions can be performed effectively without the aid of range and rate-of-closure-of-range meters at speeds up to approximately 50 feet per second; however, higher speeds of interception require the use of these instruments.

A linear system for applying thrust to a ferry vehicle in the 3 terminal phase of rendezvous with a satellite is analyzed. This system requires that the ferry thrust vector per unit mass be variable and equal to a suitable linear combination of the measured position and velocity vectors of the ferry relative to the satellite. The variations of the ferry position, speed, acceleration, and mass ratio are examined for several combinations of the initial conditions and two basic control parameters analogous to the undamped natural frequency and the fraction of critical damping. Upon making a desirable selection of one control parameter and requiring minimum fuel expenditure for given terminal-phase initial conditions, a simplified analysis in one dimension practically fixes the choice of the remaining control parameter. The system can be implemented by an automatic controller or by a pilot.
