Excerpt from The Testament of Jesus And Romans was not suspended for an instant during his life. 'they elected to murder Jesus, and the Jews said, most impiously, His blood be on us, and on our children. As a people, they do not regret it to this day. Jesus warned them publicly that their destruction, as a nation, would be permitted. They deserved no better fate for why should the all-father so arrange circumstances as to prevent the destruction of such wretches? They got the treatment they demanded. In the charity of his soul, Jesus prayed the Father to forgive them, for, said he, they know not what they. Do. But it is a well-known axiom that ignorance of the law never excuses the crim inal. The true sacred character of Jesus, as would be expected, shone out grandly, despite most unfavourable circumstances. Forgiveness must only be allowed to the repentant, who have themselves atoned for their evil past by the performance of perhaps a very long series of good deeds as compensation, thereby proving conclusive ly to all, that they no longer love darkness, but the light. It must occur to the most superficial thinker that it is absurd, yea, outrageous to be told to believe that the Father could forgive people who did just the very thing he had purposed and desired them to do. Excerpt from The Story of the New Testament It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit Of God, guiding them constantly from within. Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus An exceptional value to some Of its parts. Gospels and Epistles, it is true, alike had their origin in the Christian community, and alike come to us with a certain impress of the personality of their writers. The Gospels are not unmediated reports Of the sayings and doings of Jesus, and the Epistles are an invaluable help for understanding who Jesus was and what He taught. It is doing Violence to the known facts Of the origin Of the New Testament writings to establish any sharp contrast between the Gospels and Epistles, and it is doing violence to what we actually find to be the presentation Of Christianity in these two sections Of the New Testament. At the same time, Christ Himself is the supreme authority on Christianity. His own words claim our first attention. What He teaches about God, and Himself, and the spiritual life is the regulative teaching, in whose light the teaching Of His disciples is to be interpreted. Excerpt from The Making of the New Testament The New Testament presents the paradox of a literature born of protest against the tyranny of a canon, yet ultimately canonized itself through an increasing demand for/ external authority. This paradox is full of significance. We must examine it more closely. The work of Jesus was a consistent effort} to set religion free from the deadening system of the scribes. He was conscious of a direct, divine authority. The broken lights of former inspiration are lost in the full dawn of God's presence to His soul.
