This important new study of James Joyce's working practices relates the true history and origin of English literature's towering masterwork, Finnegans Wake (1939), and lays the ground for an intellectual biography of the last eighteen years of its author's life. At the heart of this book Rose presents an original ordering of, and commentary upon, the virtually unknown collection of notebooks compiled by Joyce during this period and now immured in American university archives. In so doing, he opens a window onto a new world of textual exploration while enabling both specialist and non-specialist alike to understand how Joyce came to construct and write his 'unreadable' book. It will be an invaluable tool for teachers and research students, and a source of delight to all concerned with the hermeneutics of intellectual investigation.

“Excellent.”—Studies: An Irish Quarterly “A handy anthology of key articles, twelve in all, excavated from the trove of Joyce interpretation, analysis and scholarship. . . . Each piece marks a moment of departure subsequent studies have built on, extended, or reacted against, but which nonetheless laid down significant parameters for approaching Joyce’s works.”—Irish Studies Review "Provides readers with introductions to, and examples of, important Joyce scholarship during its middle years, the 1950s and 1960s, when much of the groundwork for today’s Joyce criticism was laid."--Patrick A. McCarthy, University of Miami"Provides readers a revealing, stimulating basis for moving forward with their own interpretations while remembering the paths, clearly marked out by the editor’s introductions and selections, already traveled by twelve canny, influential, earlier readers of Joyce’s memorable narratives."--John Paul Riquelme, Boston UniversityThis collection presents, in a single volume, key seminal essays in the study of James Joyce. Joyce's methods of composition have only recently begun to be examined in a rigorous fashion. Already the work done on the genesis of Joyce's texts has fostered both new insights and new questions regarding the overall status of his oeuvre. The conference Genitricksling Joyce, held at Antwerp in 1997, testified to the variety and vitality of genetic investigations into Joyce's work. We have tried to recreate this vitality in the present volume with a double purpose, or double trick. First, the essays collected in Genitricksling Joyce are not only indicative of the growing body of genetic scholarship, they also signify methodological and theoretical changes among its practitioners towards a more open form of discussion and understanding. Second, we hope that these essays will clearly demonstrate the relevance of genetic criticism to current critical and cultural concerns in Joyce studies.

In his denial that language refers to anything but itself and in his undoing representation, Joyce anticipates contemporary developments in the history of critical theory. Contrary to modern criticism, Joyce does not abandon representation, the idea that language affords access to reality.

Before Joyce became famous as writer, he supported himself through his other language work: English-language teaching in Pola, Trieste, and Rome. The importance of James Joyce's teaching, however, has been underestimated until now. The very playfulness and unconventionality that made him a popular and successful teacher has led his pedagogy to be underrated, and the connections between his teaching and his writing have been largely neglected. James Joyce's Teaching Life and Methods reveals the importance in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake of pedagogy and the understanding of language Joyce gained teaching English as a Foreign Language in Berlitz schools and elsewhere.
