This fascinating study explores the critical «Volksstücke» of Franz Xaver Kroetz as they confront the crisis of contemporary West German theater in representing social reality and effecting social change. Focusing particularly on problems of intention and reception, the author undertakes a detailed analysis of representative plays from «Männersache» to «Furcht und Hoffnung der BRD». What emerges is an aesthetic model which subverts the very forms it employs, and derives its effectiveness from the tension between word and image, identification and distance, self-reflection and political commitment. Offering an interpretation which sees in Kroetz's plays a radical attempt to rescue the communicative and utopian dimensions of the theater, this study yields insight into the limits and possibilities of the Kroetzian «Volksstück», and locates it firmly within the context of contemporary aesthetic concerns.

Like Sam Shepard - the American playwright whose career his most nearly resembles - Franz Xaver Kroetz is a controversial figure whose works have helped reshape world drama over the last two decades. His unsparing portraits of life in Germany's lower middle class redefine the notion of realism on the stage. The only Kroetz collection available in English, this volume includes: Through the Leaves, about a female butcher and her laborer lover; The Nest, about a worker who inadvertently poisons a lake and, consequently, injures his infant son; and Mensch Meier, about a jittery, imaginative Munich assembly-line worker, his vague, housebound wife and their silently observant teenage son.

A marital argument. An unwanted pregnancy. A lost job. An illicit love affair. Such are the pivotal issues of Kroetz's plays. They are plays describing everyday people with many dreams, few words to express them, and little hope of achieving them. People caught helplessly in the tidepools and eddies of mainstream consumer society. Kroetz captures them with a language and characterization so convincing, so compelling, that within the space of a few seasons he has become one of West Germany's most popular and acclaimed playwrights. This work examines the author and his writings, allowing both to speak for themselves while simultaneously following the interconnecting threads of philosophy, theme, and style which make up the fabric of Kroetz's proletarian dramaturgy.

Franz Xaver Kroetz -- banana-cutter, hospital orderly, fledgling actor and, more significantly, Germany's most popular contemporary dramatist of the seventies and early eighties. This study, which situates Kroetz's aesthetics in a political context, focuses on four plays that mark crisis points in his development of a political aesthetic. The breaks in otherwise very successful aesthetic models occur as Kroetz responds to changing social conditions. All those interested in Kroetz, as well as in broader aesthetic questions, will find that this book makes important breakthroughs.
