Robert Wilson's theatre is the stuff of legend. He has taught theatre-goers to see the world with different eyes. Stefan Brecht's book provides detailed documentation and analysis of a number of Wilson's earliest groundbreaking works including The Life of Sigmund Freud, Deafman Glance and Einstein on the Beach. "Never since I was born have I seen anything more beautiful on this earth, never ever has there been another performance to equal this one, because it is simultaneously life at its most vivid and life with its eyes closed, reality mixed with dreaming, the inexplicability of everything in a deaf man's glance." (Louis Aragon Open Letter to André Breton) "His theatre is a world of its own" (Heiner Müller)

Art Vision And Nineteenth Century Realist Drama written by Amy Holzapfel and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-03 with Performing Arts categories.

Realism in theatre is traditionally defined as a mere seed of modernism, a crude attempt to reproduce an exact copy of reality on stage. Art, Vision & Nineteenth-Century Realist Drama redefines realism as a complex and under-examined form of visual modernism, one that positioned theatre at the crux of the encounter between consciousness and the visible world. Tracing a historical continuum of "acts of seeing" on the realist stage, Holzapfel demonstrates how theatre participated in modernity’s aggressive interrogation of vision’s residence in the human body. New findings by scientists and philosophers—such as Diderot, Goethe, Müller, Helmholtz, and Galton—exposed how the visible world is experienced and framed by the unstable relativism of the physiological body rather than the fixed idealism of the mind. Realist artists across media paradoxically embraced this paradigm shift by focusing on the embodied observer. Drawing from extensive archival research, Holzapfel conducts close readings of iconic dramas and their productions—including Scribe’s The Glass of Water, Zola’s Thérèse Raquin, Ibsen’s A Doll House, Strindberg’s The Father, and Hauptmann’s Before Sunrise—alongside analyses of artwork by major painters and photographers—such as Chardin, Nadar, Millais, Rejlander, and Liebermann. In a radical challenge to existing criticism, Holzapfel argues that realism in theatre was never the attempt to reproduce an exact copy of the seen world but rather the struggle to make visible the act of seeing.

Geometry And Atmosphere written by C. Alan Short and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Architecture categories.

Drawing on detailed design, construction and financial histories of six prominent Performing Arts buildings with budgets ranging from £3.4 million to over £100 million, Geometry and Atmosphere presents unique and valuable insights into the complex process of building for the arts. Each theatre project, from tailor-made spaces for avant-garde companies to iconic and innovative receiving houses, yields surprising and counter-intuitive findings. For each of the six projects, the authors have interviewed all those involved. Combining these interviews with exhaustive archival research, the authors then provide cross-case analysis which is distilled into guidance for all stakeholders as they transform their initial vision into built reality. In particular, the book challenges the technical focus of existing design guides for the Performing Arts by suggesting that current practice in briefing and design does not serve the Arts community especially well. It shows that there is a need for an approach in which the focus is firmly rooted in the delivery of the driving artistic vision. As well as being of interest to architects, urban designers and those involved in theatre studies, this book will be useful to other sectors where public money is spent on major building projects.

The Plays Of Miracle Wonder written by Brett Bailey and has been published by Juta and Company Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Drama categories.

From a truly groundbreaking voice in African theater, these three plays have disturbed and transported audiences in South Africa and abroad with their depictions of some uncomfortable episodes in South African history. From witch hunts in Kokstad and the saga of King Hintsa’s skull to the prophecies of Nongqawuse and the ensuing cattle-killing crisis, these plays touch on shared neuroses and fears, blending the tragic and transcendent with the farcical. With accompanying essays and working notes, the playwright gives background and insight into each of the productions and outlines his own artistic development and vision. This richly designed book re-creates something of the funky energy, haunting magic, and colorful imagery of the plays themselves.
