This monograph makes available, in English, the elementary parts of classical algebraic number theory. This second edition follows closely the plan and style of the first edition. The principal changes are the correction of misprints, the expansion or simplification of some arguments, and the omission of the final chapter on units in order to make way for the introduction of some two hundred problems.

Updated to reflect current research and extended to cover more advanced topics as well as the basics, Algebraic Number Theory and Fermat’s Last Theorem, Fifth Edition introduces fundamental ideas of algebraic numbers and explores one of the most intriguing stories in the history of mathematics—the quest for a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. The authors use this celebrated theorem to motivate a general study of the theory of algebraic numbers, initially from a relatively concrete point of view. Students will see how Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem opened many new areas for future work. New to the Fifth Edition Pell's Equation x^2-dy^2=1: all solutions can be obtained from a single `fundamental' solution, which can be found using continued fractions. Galois theory of number field extensions, relating the field structure to that of the group of automorphisms. More material on cyclotomic fields, and some results on cubic fields. Advanced properties of prime ideals, including the valuation of a fractional ideal relative to a prime ideal, localisation at a prime ideal, and discrete valuation rings. Ramification theory, which discusses how a prime ideal factorises when the number field is extended to a larger one. A short proof of the Quadratic Reciprocity Law based on properties of cyclotomic fields. This Valuations and p-adic numbers. Topology of the p-adic integers. Written by preeminent mathematicians Ian Stewart and David Tall, this text continues to teach students how to extend properties of natural numbers to more general number structures, including algebraic number fields and their rings of algebraic integers. It also explains how basic notions from the theory of algebraic numbers can be used to solve problems in number theory.

Algebraic number theory is one of the most refined creations in mathematics. It has been developed by some of the leading mathematicians of this and previous centuries. The primary goal of this book is to present the essential elements of algebraic number theory, including the theory of normal extensions up through a glimpse of class field theory. Following the example set for us by Kronecker, Weber, Hilbert and Artin, algebraic functions are handled here on an equal footing with algebraic numbers. This is done on the one hand to demonstrate the analogy between number fields and function fields, which is especially clear in the case where the ground field is a finite field. On the other hand, in this way one obtains an introduction to the theory of 'higher congruences' as an important element of 'arithmetic geometry'. Early chapters discuss topics in elementary number theory, such as Minkowski's geometry of numbers, public-key cryptography and a short proof of the Prime Number Theorem, following Newman and Zagier. Next, some of the tools of algebraic number theory are introduced, such as ideals, discriminants and valuations. These results are then applied to obtain results about function fields, including a proof of the Riemann-Roch Theorem and, as an application of cyclotomic fields, a proof of the first case of Fermat's Last Theorem. There are a detailed exposition of the theory of Hecke $L$-series, following Tate, and explicit applications to number theory, such as the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Chapter 9 brings together the earlier material through the study of quadratic number fields. Finally, Chapter 10 gives an introduction to class field theory. The book attempts as much as possible to give simple proofs. It can be used by a beginner in algebraic number theory who wishes to see some of the true power and depth of the subject. The book is suitable for two one-semester courses, with the first four chapters serving to develop the basic material. Chapters 6 through 9 could be used on their own as a second semester course.

The aim of this book is to present an exposition of the theory of alge braic numbers, excluding class-field theory and its consequences. There are many ways to develop this subject; the latest trend is to neglect the classical Dedekind theory of ideals in favour of local methods. However, for numeri cal computations, necessary for applications of algebraic numbers to other areas of number theory, the old approach seems more suitable, although its exposition is obviously longer. On the other hand the local approach is more powerful for analytical purposes, as demonstrated in Tate's thesis. Thus the author has tried to reconcile the two approaches, presenting a self-contained exposition of the classical standpoint in the first four chapters, and then turning to local methods. In the first chapter we present the necessary tools from the theory of Dedekind domains and valuation theory, including the structure of finitely generated modules over Dedekind domains. In Chapters 2, 3 and 4 the clas sical theory of algebraic numbers is developed. Chapter 5 contains the fun damental notions of the theory of p-adic fields, and Chapter 6 brings their applications to the study of algebraic number fields. We include here Shafare vich's proof of the Kronecker-Weber theorem, and also the main properties of adeles and ideles.

Excerpt from The Elements of the Theory of Algebraic Numbers It has been my endeavor in this book to lead by easy stages a reader, entirely unacquainted with the subject, to an appreciation of some of the fundamental conceptions in the general theory of algebraic numbers. With this object in view, I have treated the theory of rational integers more in the manner of the general theory than is usual, and have emphasized those properties of these integers which find their analogues in the general theory. The same may be said of the general quadratic realm, which has been treated rather as an example of the general realm of the nth degree than simply as of the second degree, as little use as was possible, without too great sacrifice of simplicity, being made of the special properties of the quadratic realm in the proofs. The theorems and their proofs have therefore been so formulated as to be readily extendable, in most cases, to the general realm of the nth degree, and it is hoped that a student, who wishes to continue the study of the subject, will find the reading of works on the general theory, such as Hilbert's Bericht über die Theorie der Algebraischen Zahlkorper, rendered easier thereby. The proofs of the theorems relating to biquadratic residues have necessarily been omitted but the examples given will make the reader acquainted with their content. Constance Reid, in Chapter VII of her book Hilbert, tells the story of the writing of the Zahlbericht, as his report entitled Die Theorie der algebra is chen Zahlkorper has always been known. At its annual meeting in 1893 the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (the German Mathematical Society) invited Hilbert and Minkowski to prepare a report on the current state of affairs in the theory of numbers, to be completed in two years. The two mathematicians agreed that Minkowski should write about rational number theory and Hilbert about algebraic number theory. Although Hilbert had almost completed his share of the report by the beginning of 1896 Minkowski had made much less progress and it was agreed that he should withdraw from his part of the project. Shortly afterwards Hilbert finished writing his report on algebraic number fields and the manuscript, carefully copied by his wife, was sent to the printers. The proofs were read by Minkowski, aided in part by Hurwitz, slowly and carefully, with close attention to the mathematical exposition as well as to the type-setting; at Minkowski's insistence Hilbert included a note of thanks to his wife. As Constance Reid writes, "The report on algebraic number fields exceeded in every way the expectation of the members of the Mathemati cal Society. They had asked for a summary of the current state of affairs in the theory. They received a masterpiece, which simply and clearly fitted all the difficult developments of recent times into an elegantly integrated theory.

This is a second edition of Lang's well-known textbook. It covers all of the basic material of classical algebraic number theory, giving the student the background necessary for the study of further topics in algebraic number theory, such as cyclotomic fields, or modular forms. "Lang's books are always of great value for the graduate student and the research mathematician. This updated edition of Algebraic number theory is no exception."—-MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS
