Excerpt from The Theory of Light IN undertaking the preparation of this fourth edition I felt, both on account of my respect for its late author and because the book has been so successful, that I ought to leave untouched, as far as possible, the main body of the text. Accordingly in this respect changes have only been made where such were necessary, in order to correct the few errors or inaccuracies which I have noticed, or to which I have seen attention directed occasionally in scientific papers. I have not considered it necessary to mark these alterations in any special way, but I gladly acknowledge here the assistance which such references have given me. Excerpt from The Wave Theory of Light When, however, Michelson and Morley attempt to detect this relative motion of the earth and the ether as the earth proceeds in its orbital motion, they do not succeed in certainly finding that there is any [phil. Mag, December, and they accordingly conclude that this relative motion is quite small enough to refute Fresnel's explanation of aberration. Of the two experimental facts just cited, one apparently confirms Fresnel's view, and makes possible an explanation of aberration in terms of the wave-theory; while the other leads us to think that the ether moves with the refracting medium, in which case the wave-theory appears incompetent to explain stellar aberration. Excerpt from The Theory of Light, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise on Physical Optics A special feature of the work is the careful comparison between theory and experiment at every stage. From our standpoint as to the aim of science, such a comparison appears all-important. The one difficulty in this matter has been to get access to the most accurate and recent experimental results; a difficulty arising entirely from the present isolation of the writer. At the ends of the earth there are no great libraries to which to refer, and the procuring of material from 'home' is tedious and uncertain. In dealing with experimental results I have deliberately refrained from entering upon descriptions of the methods of experiment as, in my judgment, quite out of place in such a work as this. Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory of Light, Vol. 1 The Ether. - The medium assumed for the propagation of light is termed ether. Since ether evidently pervades not only terrestial but interstellar space, it cannot be identical with our atmosphere. Moreover, we must assume that ether pervades all transparent bodies, but, as the behaviour of light in such bodies is different from its behaviour in the air, that the ether pervading the former is different from that of the air that is, that the properties to be assigned the ether differ for different bodies or media. These properties are evidently determined by certain unknown actions (resistances) between the material particles of the given body and the particles (elements) of the ether pervading that body they thus differ for different bodies. Consequently, opaque bodies could also be conceived as permeated by ether, and thus ether itself as pervading not only all space, both terrestial and interstellar, but all bodies 3 that is, it may be regarded as a continuous medium. Excerpt from The Science of Light This book is intended as a companion to that on Radiation previously published in this same series, and the first three chapters in that book should be read before commencing this. Light plays such an important part in the life of man that it is only natural that speculation as to its nature and investigation of its laws should have begun very early. But although this is true, yet the ancients seem to have been exceedingly slow in the invention and construction of optical instruments, and to have been completely innocent of any reasonable optical theory. All the refinements both of construction and theory have happened well within the last three centuries. Metallic mirrors are, of course, very ancient. Many of them have been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs, and they are very distinctly mentioned in the books of Exodus and Job. Burning-glasses in the form of globes of water or of glass were also known at a very early time, Aristophanes mentioning them in a comedy of his which was performed in 424 B.C. The most reasonable of the early theories was also one of the very earliest. Pythagoras, who died somewhere about 520 B.C., considered the sensation of sight to be caused by particles continuously shot out from luminous surfaces and entering the pupil of the eye. This is exactly the theory which Newton developed so brilliantly over 2000 years later, but the other theories were very fantastic and meaningless. Excerpt from Physical Optics, Vol. 2: The Corpuscular Theory of Light: Discussed Mathematically The undulatory theory therefore being abandoned, we must recur to a corpuscular theory, with the principle of periodicity as an essential property of light; or the luminiferous corpuscles must be considered as flying off in surfaces, sheets, or shells from luminous points, with intervals (x) which are constant for the same colour of the solar spectrum, but which vary from colour to colour, and have the values in the table, page 70, Part I.
