Excerpt from School Education Such a theory of education, which need not be careful to call itself a system of psychology, must be in harmony with the thought movements of the age; must regard education, not as a shut-off compartment, but as being as much a part of life as birth or growth, marriage or work; and it must leave the pupil attached to the world at many points of contact. It is true that educationalists are already eager to establish such contact in several directions, but their efforts rest upon an axiom here and an idea there, and there is no broad unifying basis of thought to support the whole. Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching: Or the Motives and Methods of Good School Keeping If the following volume meets a similar fate, what ever its merits, it shall lack a like excuse. This work has had its origin in a desire to contribute something toward elevating an impor tant and rising profession. Its matter comprises the substance of a part of the course of lectures addressed to the classes of the Institution under my charge, during the past two years. Those lectures, unwritten at first, were delivered in a familiar, colloquial style, - their main Object being the inculcation of such practical views as would best promote the improvement of the teacher. In writing the matter out for the press, the same style, to a considerable extent, has been retained, as I have written with an aim at usefulness rather than rhetorical effect. Excerpt from The Theory of Physical Education in Elementary Schools Of those responsible for the training of our boys and girls within a comparatively recent period and up to a very short time ago, the Educational Department in White hall made no mention whatever of Physical Exercises in the Elementary School code, and presumably considered it a matter of but small moment, whether the children of the masses grew up with undeveloped and puny bodily powers or not. Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching It is ill protesting too much. Many good resolutions of silence made and confirmed during thirty years of school-work, as every hope of a public character which brightened the early days was destroyed, have been broken by the appearance of this book. Success only strengthened the conviction that it was useless to speak; and yet when the conviction seemed strongest some folly has swept it away. Or is it instinct, like the prescient idiotcy of the butterfly, that lays its eggs on cabbage leaf, or nettle, forced by a blind impulse to thwart its own experience, and deposit part of its life where no sign warrants an idea that it will be allowed to live? A Primer General Method written by Sidney Edward Lang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-12 with Education categories.

Excerpt from A Primer General Method: Being an Introduction to Educational Theory and Practice on the Basis of Logic, for Use in Normal Schools Educational science must seek for materials in many fields. The purpose here is to point out certain considerations drawn from the study of Logic which have a direct bearing upon educational theory and practice. Psychology is almost invariably given a place on programmes for the training of teachers. It deals, however, with mental life in its structural aspects chiefly; and the educator cannot afford to omit or postpone the study of the functional side of mind. He is vitally interested in problems relating to the value or validity of cognitive processes which psychology aims simply to describe. He must enquire into the value of feeling as well as into its various forms. He cannot be satisfied with a mere description of volitional experience, but desires to go forward to a valuation of conduct. The three closely connected fields of logic, aesthetics, and ethics thus lie alongside that of psychology in a complementary relation which cannot be ignored in a programme of studies for Normal Schools. Indeed, the beginner in educational science might far more easily dispense with Psychology than with Logic. Excerpt from A Primer of School Method The young teacher used to spend four or five years learning his professional work. Theory and practice went on side by side. The practical work has now been limited to a one year's course, and theory has disappeared from the syllabus. Under these circum stances it is'thought that many young teachers will more than ever require assistance to Supplement their very brief and very empirical training. This little primer is a contribution towards that assistance, and it is hoped that it may be a real aid to those. Excerpt from Methods for Elementary and Secondary Schools Beneath this general range of theory and near to the processes in the school is the realm of method. In it with one's mind upon both theory and practice it is possible to carve out and set forth guidance of the most valuable and significant character. All true method is concreted law. Method puts the abstraction of the philosophic mind into workable form for the teacher in the school. These workable forms ma be further reduced to a specific field of knowledge and t c then become special methods.
