Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Chinese / China, grade: "-", , language: English, abstract: "One of the best Chinese Civil War books of all time" - BookAuthority The Chinese civil war is one of the key events of 20th century. The victory of the Communists over the Nationalists determined the Chinese history over several generations and defined international relations in East Asia throughout the Cold War era and after. The civil war in China represents not only the clashes of armies, but also of nations and classes. As all civil wars it represents furthermore a traumatic and painful process within a people with atrocities on both sides and horrendous suffering of combatants and civilians. The civil strife between the Nationalists and Communists on mainland China had begun in the 1920s, coming to a head right after the end of World War II in 1945, when the Communists began the successful drive that won them final control over China in October 1949. From then on China was under the rule of Mao’s Communist Party with one exception: Taiwan. The island southeast of mainland China was ruled by Chiang Kai-shek. Since 1949 the world has dealt with two Chinese states: the People’s Republic of China or PRC in mainland China under the Communists and the Republic of China or ROC in Taiwan under the Nationalists.

Civil War In China written by Suzanne Pepper and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

Many books have tried to analyze the reasons for the Chinese communist success in China's 1945_1949 civil war, but Suzanne Pepper's seminal work was the first and remains the only comprehensive analysis of how the ruling Nationalists lost that war_not just militarily, but by alienating the civilian population through corruption and incompetence. Now available in a new edition, this authoritative investigation of Kuomintang failure and communist success explores the new research and archival resources available for assessing this pivotal period in contemporary Chinese history. Even more relevant today given the contemporary debates in Hong Kong and Taiwan over the terms of reunification with a communist-led national government in Beijing, this book is essential reading for anyone seeking a nuanced understanding of twentieth-century Chinese politics.

This second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Chinese Civil War studies the longer, broader war and its chronology carefully tracks the major events. The introduction then provides a broad overview, describing the contending forces, and showing how the Communists come out on top. The details, and these are crucial, are laid out in over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries dealing with the opposing forces and parties, the major campaigns and battles, the Long March, and of course the leadership on both sides. This book, one of few such in English, provides a very solid basis for study, but that can be accomplished more effectively by consulting the titles listed in an extensive bibliography.

This monograph examines the nature of operational art during the third and final phase of the Chinese Civil War, 1945-1949. During this period Mao Tse-Tung and the Red Army fought Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist Army for the military and political control of China. The purpose of this monograph is to examine and analyze Mao Tse-Tung as an operational level commander during the third phase of the Chinese Civil War, 1945-1949. It investigates the development and practice of Mao's theory of revolutionary war within the context of operational art. This monograph focuses on the controlling research question: Was Mao Tse-Tung practicing operational art during the third phase of the Chinese Civil War, 1945-1949? To answer this question the monograph focuses on five areas. First, this paper examines the contemporary theory of operational art. This first section establishes the theoretical foundation for examining the controlling research question. This section introduces and examines the development of operational art. This includes a discussion of military strategy and the operational challenge of orchestrating the ends, ways, and means of national power into successful military operations. Finally, this section identifies and defines the principal components of operational design. The second section presents a brief introduction to the military history of the third phase of the Chinese Civil War. Between 1945 to 1949 the Nationalist and Communist Chinese fought a large scale struggle for control of mainland China. During this period Mao was able to fully implement his theory against his Nationalist opponents. The third section analyzes this period of the Chinese Civil War in terms of operational art. It answers the supporting research question; Was operational art used during this phase of the Chinese Civil War ? In addition, this section examines the Communist command and control structure to determine whether or not Mao was in a position from which he could directly plan the operations of the Communist field armies. The fifth section briefly examines this period of the Chinese Civil War using James Schneider's eight key attributes of operational art in an effort to solidify the answer to the supporting research question; Was operational art used during this phase of the Chinese Civil War? Finally, in the concluding section, this monograph uses the weight of evidence from the analysis contained in the previous sections to answer the controlling research question. The purpose is to determine whether or not Mao deserves the title of operational artist for the design and conduct of Communist operations against the Nationalist forces of Chaing Kai-shek during the third phase of the Chinese Civil War.

The emergence of China as a dominant regional power with global influence is a significant phenomenon in the twenty-first century. Its origin could be traced back to 1949 when the Chinese Communist Party under Mao Zedong came to power and vowed to transform China and the world. After the ‘century of humiliation’, China was in constant search of a new identity on the world stage. From alliance with the Soviet Union in the 1950s, China normalized relations with America in the 1970s and embraced the global economy and the international community since the 1980s. This book examines China’s changing relations with the two superpowers, Asian neighbours, Third World countries, and European powers. China and the World since 1945 offers an overview of China’s involvement in the Korean War, the Sino-Soviet split, Sino-American rapprochement, the end of the Cold War, and globalization. It assess the roles of security, ideology, and domestic politics in Chinese foreign policy and provides a synthesis of the latest archival-based research on China’s diplomatic history and Cold War international history This engaging new study examines the rise of China from a long-term historical perspective and will be essential to students of Chinese history and contemporary international relations.

The Tragedy Of Liberation written by Frank Dikötter and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-24 with History categories.

A groundbreaking chronicle of the violent early years of the People's Republic of China, by the author of the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize–winning Mao's Great Famine. "The Chinese Communist party refers to its victory in 1949 as a 'liberation.' In China the story of liberation and the revolution that followed is not one of peace, liberty, and justice. It is first and foremost a story of calculated terror and systematic violence.†? So begins Frank Dikötter's stunning and revelatory chronicle of Mao Zedong's ascension and campaign to transform the Chinese into what the party called New People. Following the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek in 1949, after a bloody civil war, Mao hoisted the red flag over Beijing's Forbidden City, and the world watched as the Communist revolution began to wash away the old order. Due to the secrecy surrounding the country's records, little has been known before now about the eight years that followed, preceding the massive famine and Great Leap Forward. Drawing on hundreds of previously classified documents, secret police reports, unexpurgated versions of leadership speeches, eyewitness accounts of those who survived, and more, The Tragedy of Liberation bears witness to a shocking, largely untold history. Interweaving stories of ordinary citizens with tales of the brutal politics of Mao's court, Frank Dikötter illuminates those who shaped the "liberation†? and the horrific policies they implemented in the name of progress. People of all walks of life were caught up in the tragedy that unfolded, and whether or not they supported the revolution, all of them were asked to write confessions, denounce their friends, and answer queries about their political reliability. One victim of thought reform called it a "carefully cultivated Auschwitz of the mind.†? Told with great narrative sweep, The Tragedy of Liberation is a powerful and important document giving voice at last to the millions who were lost, and casting new light on the foundations of one of the most powerful regimes of the twenty-first century.
