Although this is a clinical text, it is also more a conversation than a book. It is a means of sharing the work of artists, most of whom have varying degrees of special needs. It emphasizes that handicapping conditions do not constitute a barrier for creating therapeutically meaningful art. The precepts of Edith Kramer focus on subtly suggesting media, content, or techniques, all without interfering with the artist’s preferences. This intervention came to be known as the ‘Third Hand’ where the artist in therapy is free to accept, reject or ignore the therapist’s suggestions. The case vignettes describe how aesthetic richness is also illustrative of the uniqueness of clients’ clinical stories, with the artists’ emotional or behavioral challenges overcoming and even benefiting by their conditions. The work of early pioneers who influenced Kramer’s illustrate how her own analytical methods later shaped her approach. The format in this book also questions the author as being the ultimate authority, by posing questions to the reader, says a kind of dialogue that emphasizes there are no absolutes in art, behavioral science or therapy. While espousing Kramer’s and his own ideas, Henley also includes those of other art therapists who contribute their own expertise, in the hope that the analyses will be enriched from multiple perspectives. Dr. Henley describes how her therapeutic interventions were debated during their many years of collegial interaction. By describing Kramer’s early influences and personal art history, he describes how Kramer’s interventions helped innumerable clients and trained hundreds of student therapists. These facets will hopefully enable creative arts therapists to implement her patented artist-centered interventions. The processes and artistic outcomes will lead the way, guiding the reader toward the uses of the Third Hand and hopefully bring alive the uniqueness of these special artists’ stories.

The lone artist is a worn cliche of art history but one that still defines how we think about the production of art. Since the 1960s, however, a number of artists have challenged this image by embarking on long-term collaborations that dramatically altered the terms of artistic identity. In The Third Hand, Charles Green offers a sustained critical examination of collaboration in international contemporary art, tracing its origins from the evolution of conceptual art in the 1960s into such stylistic labels as Earth Art, Systems Art, Body Art, and Performance Art. During this critical period, artists around the world began testing the limits of what art could be, how it might be produced, and who the artist is. Collaboration emerged as a prime way to reframe these questions. Green looks at three distinct types of collaboration: the highly bureaucratic identities created by Joseph Kosuth, Ian Burn, Mel Ramsden, and other members of Art & Language in the late 1960s; the close-knit relationships based on marriage or lifetime partnership as practiced by the Boyle Family, Anne and Patrick Poirier, Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison; and couples -- like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George, or Marina Abramovic and Ulay -- who developed third identities, effacing the individual artists almost entirely. These collaborations, Green contends, resulted in new and, at times, extreme authorial models that continue to inform current thinking about artistic identity and to illuminate the origins of postmodern art, suggesting, in the process, a new genealogy for art in the twenty-first century.

“Second hand low” and “third hand high” are adages we learned in Bridge 101 along with others like “cover an honor with an honor” and “always return your partner’s suit.” These so-called rules will get you by, but they won’t see you very far. Second hand must become familiar with certain basic positions to try to foil declarer’s plans, often by playing second hand high. Likewise, many contracts are decided by the play of third hand at trick one. While your play may at first seem so obvious, a little thought may help you find the right card. Being a slave to either “second hand low” or “third hand high” can only lead you down the road to many disasters. Take time to review what you know from the bidding. Think about the hand type. Does it call for passive or aggressive defense? Hopefully after reading the examples in this book you will become more attuned to the variety of options available. The hands are placed in chapters by themes, but of course there is some overlap. We’re sure you will recognize situations from your own experiences at the table. We’re sure after reading this book you will be more attuned to becoming a thinking bridge player, and less a player just following old nursery rhymes.
