In 1098 Robert de Molesmes founded the Cistercian order, with the intention of adhering as closely as possible to the ancient rule set down by Saint Benedict in the early 6th century. Abbeys developed rapidly during the 12th century; here the watchword was the rejection of the world in favour of a self-sufficient communal life focused on labour, proyer, and contemplation. The monks' daily existence was inextricably linked to their surrounding environment. The majestic restraint of Cistercian architecture echoes the humility and spirituality of monastic life. Starkness takes priority over decoration; abstraction excludes ornament. Le Thoronet Abbey, founded in the 1170s, is a perfect example of the intertwining of architecture and the divine world.

in1952 Le Corbusier was commissioned "to dwell in the silence of men of prayer and study and to construct a church for them". The result was his impressive Convent of La Tourette, marking a significant step in modern religious architecture. Beginning with the rectangular form common to the Cirstercian monastic tradition, he created a building whose stark form contrasts beautifully with the organic elements of the interior court and the grasslands surrounding it. The church itself is a model of simplicity, the cement has been left rough and the well located sources of light evoke a feeling of silence and reflection. The order s precept of prayer, study and reflection is aptly mirrored in the architecture. Like the other Le Corbusier Guides published by Birkhäuser, this volume provides a wealth of plans, details, photographs and information on this building which today is also a conference centre.

Maharam Stories written by Michael Maharam and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-14 with Design categories.

Engaging, revealing, and idiosyncratic stories on design from 100 top luminaries of the design world. Maharam Stories contains engaging, revealing, and inspiring texts by the most significant designers and writers working today—from John Pawson’s musing on the eleventh-century abbey of Le Thoronet, which he cites as an endless source of inspiration for his own minimalist architecture, to Alice Rawsthorn on her favorite nineteenth-century chocolate shop in Vienna (still going strong). Some are humorous lessons in design, such as Murray Moss’s story about growing up with a water fountain in their family’s dining room, installed by his scientist father who believed in hygiene over aesthetics. Others reveal how politics can inform design, such as Stefan Sagmeister’s story of a cheap plastic watch given to him by Ben Cohen (of Ben & Jerry’s) which shows in colorful pie chart graphics that year’s national budget spending—with over half going to the Pentagon. With commissioned and unique photography and images and the texts by significant design luminaries, Maharam Stories is sure to both delight and educate design lovers.
