Using werewolves and Wernher von Braun, Stonehenge and the sex lives of sea corals, aboriginal myths, and an Anglican bishop in this new book, the author weaves variegated information into a glimpse of Earth's closest celestial neighbor, whose mere presence inspires us to wonder what might be out there. Going beyond the discoveries of contemporary science, he presents a cultural assessment of our complex relationship with Earth's lifeless, rocky satellite. As well as offering an engaging perspective on such age old questions as "What would Earth be like without the moon?" he surveys the moon's mythical and religious significance and provokes existential soul searching through a lunar lens, inquiring, "Forty years ago, the first man put his footprint on the moon. Will we continue to use it as the screen onto which we cast our hopes and fears?" Drawing on materials from different cultures and epochs, he walks readers down a moonlit path illuminated by more than seventy-five vintage photographs and illustrations. From scientific discussions of the moon's origins and its chronobiological effects on the mating and feeding habits of animals to an illuminating interpretation of Bishop Francis Godwin's 1638 novel The Man in the Moone, his interdisciplinary explorations recast a familiar object in an original light.

Moons A Very Short Introduction written by David A. Rothery and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-26 with Science categories.

Proving to be both varied and fascinating, moons are far more common than planets in our Solar System. Our own Moon has had a profound influence on Earth, not only through tidal effects, but even on the behaviour of some marine animals. Many remarkable things have been discovered about the moons of the giant outer planets from Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, and other spacecraft. Scientists have glimpsed volcanic activity on Io, found oceans of water on Titan, and captured photos of icy geysers bursting from Enceladus. It looks likely that microbial life beyond the Earth may be discovered on a moon rather than a planet. In this Very Short Introduction David Rothery introduces the reader to the moons of our Solar System, beginning with the early discoveries of Galileo and others, describing their variety of mostly mythological names, and the early use of Jupiter's moons to establish position at sea and to estimate the speed of light. Rothery discusses the structure, formation, and influence of our Moon, and those of the other planets, and ends with the recent discovery of moons orbiting asteroids, whilst looking forward to the possibility of finding moons of exoplanets in planetary systems far beyond our own. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The Time Before the Sun has been written with the idea that we must search the past of Earth, this solar system, and humanity if we are to forge a successful future. We must heed the Sumerians' warning: In The Past the Future is Hidden. The author reveals original content from his 37-year-research dealing with our ideas on the remote past of this solar system, including certain aspects of what we believe are the lack of any type of origins, celestial or organic. We at the Manunnaki Order of Heaven from https: //hespesky.com are pitching the idea that eternity is consistent with the existence of the spirit, where the spirit is an electromagnetic being with more pure physical aspects than the flesh. Here eternity becomes the ruler of the Entire Total of Everything. The MOH is convinced that everything is eternal, including life. We also propose that Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Earth, and Mars must be recent (3,000 years) sun captures. We have also included a few revised chapters from the author's best seller book, The Lost Planet of Enki. He urges the reader to pay close attention to the following... We are certain the atmosphere of the new Earth is beginning to recognize the surface. Lightning, hurricanes, and tornadoes are the kisses the atmosphere of the new Earth is giving to her ever-evolving surface. Think of this as a celestial wedding where we are forcibly invited. Earth is a pig! We believe she must be a living organism. We have evidence to support the notion that Earth feeds from the fabric of space. She defecates volcanic activity. We are of course hopping to be wrong. But if we are right, then all of us are standing on Earth's feces! Oh no! As you will see, this is not a joke. There is more weird stuff: The surface of the new Earth is hermaphroditic: female dry land, male ocean. She is very aroused as you read. The waters of the new Earth are making love to the dry ground all over the place. The new Earth loves it. To be even more lovable, her new interior produces more surface every day. The entire new Earth is becoming more and more less good for human inhabitation. You know it. And we know it. The people that claim they know what is happening to the entire new Earth are calling their knowledge "human-made climate change." This is completely wrong. What is truly and really happening is that the new Earth is growing bigger and bigger. Getting hotter and hotter. This book will begin to tell you how this is taking place: How the new Earth is getting ready to become awfully bad for ground gardening. And, if we cannot tell you everything here, you will be directed to hespesky.com where all the right information is located. Warning: Do not attach your heart to material things. They will all be gone. You will certainly suffer more if you put your love on what you build. Everything that you have, and love, which is of this new Earth, will be under water more and more as the unfolding century rolls out. Do not pray that we are wrong. Praying will do you no good. Asking for God's help will be futile. The new Earth's destiny as a developing celestial body is unstoppable. Be one with the future. Join this author. But first, buy The Time Before the Sun today!

A Sunday Times must read book of 2019 'An out-of-this-world read ... brilliant and compelling. Morton is a high-octane British science journalist, and every chapter is littered with material that strikes, amazes or haunts ... this is a book filled not just with a lifetime's knowledge of its subject but with a lifetime's suppressed excitement.' James McConnachie, Sunday Times Every generation has looked up from the Earth and wondered at the beauty of the Moon. 50 years ago, a few Americans became the first to do the reverse - with the whole world watching through their eyes. In this short but wide-ranging book, Oliver Morton explores the history and future of humankind's relationship with the Moon. A counterpoint in the sky, it has shaped our understanding of the Earth from Galileo to Apollo. Its gentle light has spoken of love and loneliness; its battered surface of death and the cosmic. For some, it is a future on which humankind has turned its back. For others, an adventure yet to begin. Advanced technologies, new ambitions and old dreams mean that men, women and robots now seem certain to return to the Moon. What will they learn there about the universe, the Earth-and themselves? And, this time, will they stay?

A San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller We live in complicated, dangerous times. Present and future presidents need to know if North Korea's nascent nuclear capability is a genuine threat to the West, if biochemical weapons are likely to be developed by terrorists, if there are viable alternatives to fossil fuels that should be nurtured and supported by the government, if private companies should be allowed to lead the way on space exploration, and what the actual facts are about the worsening threats from climate change. This is "must-have" information for all presidents—and citizens—of the twenty-first century. Winner of the 2009 Northern California Book Award for General Nonfiction. With the advent of CCDs and webcams, the focus of amateur astronomy has to some extent shifted from science to art. Visual work in astronomy has a rich history. Today, imaging is now more prominent. However there is still much for the visual amateur astronomer to do, and visual work is still a valid component of amateur astronomy. Paul Abel has been addressing this issue by promoting visual astronomy wherever possible – at talks to astronomical societies, in articles for popular science magazines, and on BBC TV’s The Sky at Night. Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy is a comprehensive modern treatment of visual lunar and planetary astronomy, showing that even in the age of space telescopes and interplanetary probes it is still possible to contribute scientifically with no more than a moderately-priced commercially made astronomical telescope. It is believed that imaging and photography is somehow more objective and more accurate than the eye, and this has led to a peculiar “crisis of faith” in the human visual system and its amazing processing power. But by analyzing observations from the past, we can see how accurate visual astronomy really is! Measuring the rotational period of Mars and making accurate lunar charts for American astronauts were all done by eye. The book includes sections on how the human visual system works, how to view an object through an eyepiece, and how to record observations and keep a scientific notebook. The book also looks at how to make an astronomical, rather than an artistic, drawing. Finally, everything here will also be of interest to those imagers who wish to make their images more scientifically applicable by combining the methods and practices of visual astronomy with imaging.
