In some parts of South Africa, more than one in three people are HIV positive. Love in the Time of AIDS explores transformations in notions of gender and intimacy to try to understand the roots of this virulent epidemic. By living in an informal settlement and collecting love letters, cell phone text messages, oral histories, and archival materials, Mark Hunter details the everyday social inequalities that have resulted in untimely deaths. Hunter shows how first apartheid and then chronic unemployment have become entangled with ideas about femininity, masculinity, love, and sex and have created an economy of exchange that perpetuates the transmission of HIV/AIDS. This sobering ethnography challenges conventional understandings of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

The widespread tragedy of the AIDS epidemic is forcing social scientists to change the way they think about and study subgroups within the majority culture. How is the concept of culture relevant to the study of AIDS? How can social science methods be used to uncover the epidemiology of this deadly disease? And, how can social scientists deploy what they learn to help solve the problems posed by AIDS? The Time of AIDS explores and provides provocative insights on these three critical issues. By examining research conducted with various cultural groups and in different countries, the authors offer insight on how to identify the distinct way different communities respond to the threat of this disease. These studies demonstrate that a single theory and method will not capture the importance of the AIDS epidemic, but a close look at the culture and psychology of a society can inspire more effective ways of education, intervention, and arrest of the transmission of the virus. Researchers and practitioners in anthropology, psychology, sociology, and nursing will benefit from this enlightening volume.

When AIDS was first identified, the Christian right immediately declared that this was God's punishment of promiscuous gays. But HIV and AIDS also spread amongst the heterosexual community and worked its devastating way through the African continent. HIV/AIDS now also poses a huge challenge to India, which has more than five million people living with HIV/AIDS. And yet The Vatican still condemns the use of contraceptives in any circumstances. Here a group of progressive Christians face the fundamental issues full on. Christians and Sexuality in the Time of AIDS seeks to explore issues of theology, sexuality and Christian ethics and includes contributions from Antoine Lion, Eric Fassin, Abdon Goudjo And Jean-Louis Vilde.

India is firmly in the grip of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and it is believed that the numbers of those infected far outstrip available estimates. Even though the epidemic is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, there is as yet little awareness of sexual mores in the country. This, in turn, inhibits the development of effective interventions to halt the spread of the virus. This book contributes greatly to our understanding of contemporary sexual behaviour and sexual attitudes in both rural and urban India and in different strata of society, including adolescent girls, sex workers (male and female), college students and slum dwellers. Presenting case studies from around the country, the original essays in this book identify the contextual, cultural and social factors that contribute to the risk of infection. Book jacket.

We Are Having This Conversation Now offers a history, present, and future of AIDS through thirteen short conversations between Alexandra Juhasz and Theodore Kerr, scholars deeply embedded in HIV responses. They establish multiple timelines of the epidemic, offering six foundational periodizations of AIDS culture, tracing how attention to the crisis has waxed and waned from the 1980s to the present. They begin the book with a 1990 educational video produced by a Black health collective, using it to consider organizing intersectionally, theories of videotape, empowerment movements, and memorialization. This video is one of many powerful yet overlooked objects that the pair focus on through conversation to understand HIV across time. Along the way, they share their own artwork, activism, and stories of the epidemic. Their conversations illuminate the vital role personal experience, community, cultural production, and connection play in the creation of AIDS-related knowledge, archives, and social change. Throughout, Juhasz and Kerr invite readers to reflect and find ways to engage in their own AIDS-related culture and conversation.

After a decade of AIDS in Britain, 8000 have died, some 20,000 are infected with HIV, and many more carry the virus unknowingly. With no cure or vaccine, and with growing evidence of complacency, AIDS is still one of the greatest post-war challenges the UK faces. This book looks at AIDS in the UK.
