The Prosody Of Greek Speech written by A. M. Devine and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-01 with Literary Criticism categories.
The reconstruction of the prosody of a dead language is, on the face of it, an almost impossible undertaking. However, once a general theory of prosody has been developed from reliable data in living languages, it is possible to exploit texts as sources of answers to questions that would normally be answered in the laboratory. In this work, the authors interpret the evidence of Greek verse texts and musical settings in the framework of a theory of prosody based on crosslinguistic evidence and experimental phonetic and psycholinguistic data, and reconstruct the syllable structure, rhythm, accent, phrasing, and intonation of classical Greek speech. Sophisticated statistical analyses are employed to support an impressive range of new findings which relate not only to phonetics and phonology, but also to pragmatics and the syntax-phonology interface.

Intonation In L2 Discourse written by María Dolores Ramírez-Verdugo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-11 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Grounded in a systemic functional linguistic (SFL) approach, this book applies a contrastive interlanguage corpus-based approach to investigate the nature and role of L2 intonation and its pragmatic function in spoken discourse. The volume offers a brief overview of SFL theories and frameworks, with a clear focus on Halliday’s model of phonology and the proposal of developing a grammar of speech. Integrating a SFL framework with a corpus linguistic-informed approach, the book uses this foundation as a jumping-off point from which to explore the prosodic complexities involved in English language teaching and learning for L2 learners, highlighting its various functions as illustrated in examples from the UAM English Learner Spoken Corpus. A final chapter synthesizes these findings toward critically reflecting on future directions for the study of L2 speech prosody. This book will be key reading for graduate students and researchers in applied linguistics and English language teaching.

Designing Interactive Speech Systems written by Niels O. Bernsen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.
Designing Interactive Speech Systems describes the design and implementation of spoken language dialogue within the context of SLDS (spoken language dialogue systems) development. Using an applications-oriented SLDS developed through the Danish Dialogue project, the authors describe the complete process involved in designing such a system; and in doing so present several innovative practical tools, such as dialogue design guideline s, in-depth evaluation methodologies, and speech functionality analysis. The approach taken is firmly applications-oriented, describing the results of research applicable to industry and showing how the development of advanced applications drives research rather than the other way around. All those working on the research and development of spoken language services, especially in the area of telecommunications, will benefit from reading this book.

The Art And Business Of Speech Recognition written by Blade Kotelly and has been published by Addison-Wesley Professional this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Computers categories.
Most people have experienced an automated speech-recognition system when calling a company. Instead of prompting callers to choose an option by entering numbers, the system asks questions and understands spoken responses. With a more advanced application, callers may feel as if they're having a conversation with another person. Not only will the system respond intelligently, its voice even has personality. The Art and Business of Speech Recognition examines both the rapid emergence and broad potential of speech-recognition applications. By explaining the nature, design, development, and use of such applications, this book addresses two particular needs: Business managers must understand the competitive advantage that speech-recognition applications provide: a more effective way to engage, serve, and retain customers over the phone. Application designers must know how to meet their most critical business goal: a satisfying customer experience. Author Blade Kotelly illuminates these needs from the perspective of an experienced, business-focused practitioner. Among the diverse applications he's worked on, perhaps his most influential design is the flight-information system developed for United Airlines, about which Julie Vallone wrote in Investor's Business Daily "By the end of the conversation, you might want to take the voice to dinner." If dinner is the analogy, this concise book is an ideal first course. Managers will learn the potential of speech-recognition applications to reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, enhance the company brand, and even grow revenues. Designers, especially those just beginning to work in the voice domain, will learn user-interface design principles and techniques needed to develop and deploy successful applications. The examples in the book are real, the writing is accessible and lucid, and the solutions presented are attainable today. 0321154924B12242002
