A playful and erudite look at the origins of language In the beginning there was one language—one tongue that Adam used to compose the first poem, an elegy for Abel. “These days, no one bothers to ask about the tongue of Adam. It is a naive question, vaguely embarrassing and irksome, like questions posed by children, which one can only answer rather stupidly.” So begins Abdelfattah Kilito’s The Tongue of Adam, a delightful series of lectures. With a Borgesian flair for riddles, stories, and subtle scholarly distinctions, Kilito presents an assortment of discussions related to Adam’s tongue, including translation, comparative religion, and lexicography: for example, how, from Babel onward, can we explain the plurality of language? Or can Adam’s poetry be judged aesthetically, the same as any other poem? Drawing from the commentators of the Koran to Walter Benjamin, from the esoteric speculations of Judaism to Herodotus, The Tongue of Adam is a nimble book about the mysterious rise of humankind’s multilingualism.

How language evolved has been called "the hardest problem in science." In Adam's Tongue, Derek Bickerton—long a leading authority in this field—shows how and why previous attempts to solve that problem have fallen short. Taking cues from topics as diverse as the foraging strategies of ants, the distribution of large prehistoric herbivores, and the construction of ecological niches, Bickerton produces a dazzling new alternative to the conventional wisdom. Language is unique to humans, but it isn't the only thing that sets us apart from other species—our cognitive powers are qualitatively different. So could there be two separate discontinuities between humans and the rest of nature? No, says Bickerton; he shows how the mere possession of symbolic units—words—automatically opened a new and different cognitive universe, one that yielded novel innovations ranging from barbed arrowheads to the Apollo spacecraft. Written in Bickerton's lucid and irreverent style, this book is the first that thoroughly integrates the story of how language evolved with the story of how humans evolved. Sure to be controversial, it will make indispensable reading both for experts in the field and for every reader who has ever wondered how a species as remarkable as ours could have come into existence.

This collection of short stories focuses on the Scottish civil war of 1644-45, in which the Marquis of Montrose led his royalist forces in a series of stunning victories against the odds before his final defeat at Philiphaugh. Each of Hogg's five tales centres on one of the five major battles of Montrose's brilliant but ultimately futile campaign. Each tale is utterly different from the others in genre and tone, but taken together they build up a composite picture of what it was like to experience the 'anarchy and confusion' of the time at first hand.

The Clash of Images is a sweet, Borgesian mix of bildungsroman memoir, family history, short-story collection, fable, and literary criticism. Written in a graceful and charming style, Kilito’s story takes place in an unnamed coastal city of memories where a child experiences first-hand the cultural clash of text and image in a changing, modern society. It is a time when the old Arabic world of texts and oral traditions is making way for something new: the era of the image, the comic book, photo IDs, and the cinema. The stories form a kaleidoscopic memoir of growing up in two worlds, a brilliant mixture of cultural and family history. Here are tales of first kisses and first reads, Tintin and the Prophet Muhammad, fantasies of the Wild West, the inferno of the bathhouse, and the lost paradises of childhood. The Clash of Images is a celebration of the pleasures of storytelling, a magic lantern that delicately reveals how the world of books intimately connects with the world outside their pages.

The Tongue: An Evil Master...A Good Servant —wholly inspired by a family's misery brought on by the tumor called gossip and later observations at a church considered 'Pentecostal-based'. The author focused on the source of the cancer and the antidote, found in the Word of God. It is the author's hope that everyone who reads this book will discern the real enemy of mankind and seek to silence him in their own lives instead of allowing him to use them to cause dissension in the life of their fellow man.

I wrote this book heartily, truthfully, and faithfully to meet the approval of the Most Holy God. Therefore, I thought carefully about what I wrote and did more searching, scrutiny, and investigation until my work reached a degree of perfection that God loves. Knowing that God loves a person who does his work in the best way, I mean those who skillfully perform their works. This book is not exactly as the title describes, purely linguistically or religiously, but rather it inspires contemplation and reflection. Nay, therein it many experiences had drawn from literature books, dripped from the depth of history, scented of poems flower, and quoted from nature. Nevertheless, the title of the book is the fruit of the report that you will pick after walking around the gardens of various sciences. This book looks like an ancient, towering, ripe, and lucrative tree; its trunk is strong, its leaves are bright green, its fruit is sweet and delicious. An invisible caller may cheer you and say, “Obtain this book because it is a favorite. It is not like crafty lightning which promises you to rain and then his soldiers pull the trails of defeat out silently without tears. You will not be like a bird flying in the sky, and when looking at its shadow, thinks it is hunting then pounces upon it, so found nothing. I will not leave you in a desolate desert-like astray which the thirst reaches the maximum, then while he saw a charming rill from far, he found the mirage at approaching. Rather, you will be as though on an atrophic hasty horse, wandering with you among the fresh gardens of science and knowledge, and jumping between the barriers of history. Then you could smell the fragrance of juncture or age. In the end, I would tell you that this book is like a near water well whose buckets are close to those who come.

William Blake And The Language Of Adam written by Robert N. Essick and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Setting William Blake's language concepts and practices within the broad context of linguistic history, this book offers a new perspective on his poetry. Essick first looks in detail at four of Blake's paintings and addresses some basic questions in semiotic theory based on the history of the "motivated sign" idea from Plato to Wilhelm von Humboldt. Converting this background into a hermeneutic, he then demonstrates Blake's contributions to the mystical tradition and his critique of 18th-century linguistic doctrines, presenting a parodic deconstruction of rationalist sign theory in The Book of Urizen. Finally, Essick looks at Blake's compositional practices, his development of these into a transactional view of language, and the apocalyptic reordering of the relationship between meaning and being in Jerusalem.
