In any discipline, you can't find truth without understanding its tools. Philosophy is no different, yet many non-philosophers try to do philosophy without that understanding, or even knowing that there are philosophical tools. "The Tools of Philosophy" shows all of the major mechanisms for doing philosophy, and how they are related to each other, and in some cases how some are a consequence of others. We also find reason to believe that all of the major tools of philosophy have one source, one major device, and from that device all of the rest follow. If we want to know how philosophy is done, how we might actually explore philosophical ideas, and how confident we should be in the answers we get, we need to understand how the tools of philosophy, i.e., the devices, principles, methods, concepts and systems at the foundation of the practice, can be used. The issues that attract us to philosophy are often specific to us. We can't just read what other philosophers have said and try to "adopt" or "reject." Sometimes we need to address our personal concerns uniquely. It might not be clear to those not in philosophy that there are effective ways of addressing those concerns, but there are. They can be made explicit. This is the avenue that "Tools of Philosophy" explores. You can learn to articulate and address something meaningful to you that you may have assumed was out of your reach. Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Tool The difficulty is, it requires more explanation than it gives; but let us not for that reason think the less of it. The naturalist simply labels the class and the family of man. Aristotle's definition applies to one very important but not an exclusive quality of human beings, for there are other social animals than man. No one calls ants or bees human beings, although they certainly lead a social life and possess institutions quite analogous to cities and states. The philosopher's definition is quite correct; reason is the distinctive feature of man, and the philologist's explanation of reason as the product of language removes that mystery that might be attached to reason. Yet Franklin's description of man, although not made with any intention of theorising, is the most striking one of all; for it suggests that man's reason developed by the exercise of reason. The organ was created by its function. Applied reason made of man a rational being. Work has been the great educator of mankind, and the employment of tools was the school through which man had to pass. It is ordained that in the sweat of his face man shall eat his bread, and how often do we complain that this is the order of nature! The papers that follow were read and discussed at the first Symposium on Exact Philosophy. This conference was held at Montreal on November 4th and 5th, 1971, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of McGill University and establish the Society for Exact Philosophy. The expression 'exact philosophy' is taken to signify mathematical phi losophy, i.e., philosophy done with the explicit help of mathematical logic and mathematics. So far the expression denotes an attitude rather than a fully blown discipline: it intends to convey the intention to try and pro ceed in as exact a manner as we can in formulating and discussing phi losophical problems and theories. The kind of philosophy we wish to practice and promote is disciplined rather than wild, systematic rather than disconnected, and capable of being argued over rather than oracular. We believe that even metaphysics, notoriously riotous, can be subjected to the control of logic and mathematics. Even the history of philosophy, notoriously unsystematic, can benefit from an exact reconstruction of some classical ideas.
