At heart, this is a love story on multiple levels: love of a man for the woman he envisioned years before they met, for dangerous exciting work, and for the unique and mysterious wonders of past history. It is a tale of love toppled and then resurrected, told symbolically and literally through the true narrative of a near impossible rebuilding of fallen radio towers. A handsome, young tower engineer takes on the impossible task -- rebuild WWII-era, unique radio towers without blueprints. In recounting his work in the most dangerous job on earth, a tantalizing WWII mystery of an unusual rotating aircraft beacon is uncovered. Perched for decades atop a famous radio station, no one knows why it is there. Unsolved for seventy years, with scant records to pursue, it seems unlikely anyone will ever decipher the truth. Following whispering clues from a distant past, a little known history of aviation, WWII flight navigation, and the role of the iconic towers and radio in our country's history unfolds. In the process, the shroud obscuring the origins and purpose of the mysterious beacon is lifted. Parts love story, history, mystery, and biography, this amazing story of faith, danger, and passion will have you cheering by its startling conclusion.

Petronas Twin Towers written by Cesar Pelli and has been published by Academy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-03-23 with Architecture categories.

In a world with Jumbo jets, microchips and artifical hearts, architecture had appeared to have lost its wonder, but with the building of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, now the tallest buildings on earth, this has changed and their construction has rightly restored architecture as a world wonder. It is not just because the towers are the tallest that they can make this claim. Their design by Cesar Pelli also reflects a melding of East and West. The towers embody the great spirit born of the American mid-West and now found all over the world. They also reflect the latest technology in making tall buildings, with modern materials such as stainless steel cladding which makes their spires glisten on the horizon. The design of the Petronas Towers began with an international design competition. In June 1991, eight firms were invited to participate. The architects were asked to providee a general plan for the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and a more detailed design for two towers to be occupied by Petronas, the national petroleum company of Malaysia. The Petronas Towers were expected to define a gateway, "a place that people can identify as unique to Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia." It was never discussed that the towers should become the tallest buildings in the world, only that they be beautiful.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is known worldwide for its five-degree lean. The Tower is the Campanile of the Cathedral, which together with the Baptistry and Cemetery form a breath-taking collection of monuments which are regarded as supreme examples of early Renaissance Romanesque architecture. In March 1990 the Tower was closed to the public as it was declared unsafe and close to collapse. A Commission was set up by the Italian Government with the task of developing and implementing stabilization measures. This book begins with a brief description of the history of the Tower and its construction. The reader is then introduced to the huge challenges faced by the Commission in designing and implementing appropriate stabilization measures whilst at the same time satisfying the demanding requirements of conserving a world heritage monument. In particular, two historical studies are described which proved to be most valuable in arriving at suitable stabilization measures. The first was a deduction of the history of inclination of the tower during and subsequent to construction. The results of this study were used to calibrate a sophisticated numerical model of the tower and the underlying very soft ground which proved vital in evaluating the effectiveness of various stabilization schemes. The second study was of measurements of movement made since 1911. This latter study revealed an unexpected mechanism of foundation movement which proved crucial in developing the temporary and permanent stabilization measures and which resulted in the Tower being re-opened to the public in June 2001. The book will appeal to both professionals and students in the fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It will also interest specialised audiences of geotechnical engineers and conservation architects. It may also be of wider interest to anyone planning to visit Pisa or who is intrigued as to what caused the Tower to lean and how it was stabilized.

The Construction Of The Tower Of Babel written by Juan Benet and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-21 with Architecture categories.

Juan Benet's penultimate book, The Construction of the Tower of Babelbrings together two essays that testify to the multiplicity of the author's interests, both personal and professional. The titular essay is a meditation on Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1563 painting of the Tower of Babel: the first painting in European art history to feature a building as a protagonist. An engineer by trade, Benet brings his knowledge of building construction to bear on Bruegel's creation, examining the archways, pillars, windows and the painter's meticulously depicted chaos at the heart of the edifice's centuries-long execution. An unusual analysis of architectural hubris and the linguistic myth that gave rise to it, Benet's essay builds its own linguistic telescoping structure that could be described as an "architextual" discourse on the madness of the unending project. Also included is "On the Necessity of Treason" (a theme of particular interest to Benet, whose father was shot by Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War, and whose brother was forced to escape to France, exiled for his Republican sympathies). Benet considers the essentially dual nature of the spy and the curious World War II cases of Julius Norke and William Joyce (Lord Haw-Haw) to conclude that, within the order of the State, the traitor is not only necessary, but welcome. A civil engineer by profession, Spanish writer Juan Benet(1927-93) began writing to pass the long nights of solitude he spent on construction sites in León and Asturias. He self-published his first novel, You Will Never Amount to Anything, in 1961. In 1967, he won the Biblioteca Breve Prize for his novel A Meditation.
