The Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is a Jacobean closet drama by Elizabeth Tanfield Cary. First published in 1613, it was the first work by a woman to be published under her real name. Never performed during Cary's lifetime, and apparently never intended for performance, the Senecan revenge tragedy tells the story of Mariam, the second wife of Herod. The play exposes and explores the themes of sex, divorce, betrayal, murder, and Jewish society under Herod's tyrannous rule. The wide-ranging introduction discusses the play in the context of closet drama, female dramatists and feminist criticism, providing an ideal edition for study and teaching. This is a major edition of an unusual and provocative play not widely available elsewhere.

The Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is a Jacobean-era drama written by Elizabeth Cary, Viscountess Falkland, and first published in 1613. There is some speculation that Cary may have written a play before The Tragedy of Mariam that was lost, but most scholars agree that The Tragedy of Mariam is the first extant original play written by a woman in English.

First published in 1613, The Tragedy of Mariam, the Fair Queen of Jewry is probably the first play in English known to have been authored by a woman, and it has become increasingly popular in the study of early modern women’s writing. The play, which Cary based on the story of Herod and Mariam, turns on a rumour of Herod’s death, and unfolds around the actions taken by the patriarch’s family and servants in his absence. In part a critique of male power, the play sets gender politics in sharp relief against a background of dynastic conflict and Roman imperialism.

Originally published in quarto in 1613, The Tragedy of Mariam is the earliest surviving original play in English to have been written by a woman. The centrality of the heroine's role and the eloquence with which she confronts a hostile patriarchal order has recently attracted much attention among feminist critics and scholars. The play's structure and style offer insights into the ways in which women were writing in the early modern period.

Excerpt from The Tragedy of Mariam, 1613 With Peete of State, dost make thy Muse to mete the scenes of Syracuse and Palestine. These lines, taken in conjunction with the dedicatory sonnet already printed, afford satisfactory evidence that Davies is addressing the author of Mariam. That the later Viscountess Falkland is intended is also clear, for though there were several Lady Elizabeth Carys, and several Sir Henry Carys, there appears to have been but one Lady Elizabeth who was the wife of a Sir Henry. The material portions of Davies' dedication will be found printed at the end of the present introduction. If Lady Elizabeth Cary was the E. C. Of the sonnet, who was the Mistress Elizabeth Carey.> Sir Henry Cary, later Viscount Falkland, had a sister Elizabeth, to whom the designation would of course apply, but it appears that she married Sir John Savile on 20 nov. 1 y86, when the author of Mariam must have been still in her cradle. But Sir Henry also had a rather obscure brother Philip, who was knighted sometime between March 16 0 5 and April 1609, and this Philip married a certain Elizabeth Bland of Carle ton, Yorks. This lady must then have been the Mistress Elizabeth Cary to whom Mariam is dedicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
