Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII. GOVERNOR EYRE AND THE BAPTIST MISSIONARIES. IN the Report of the Royal Commissioners it may be noted with some surprise that there is no deliverance on the conduct of the Baptist missionaries. In " the nefarious proceedings " which took place in the island subsequent to the publication of my letter, Mr. Eyre distinctly names as having taken part in them "a few Baptist missionaries, who, like Messrs. Henderson, Reid, Dendy, Hewett, and Maxwell, endorse, at public meetings or otherwise, all the untruthful statements or inuendoes propagated in Dr. Underhill's letter." Not that all the missionaries were involved in the offence; for he adds: "Whilst it is my duty to point out how mischievous has been the influence of a few of the Baptist ministers and of various members of that persuasion, it is equally my duty, and a pleasure to me, to state that I believe a large majority of the Baptist ministers have been most anxious to support the authorities, to teach their people to be loyal and industrious, and to endorse the advice given to the peasantry by Her Most Gracious Majesty."' Why the five ministers named were singled out by Blue Book: Return, June 26th, 1866, p. 13, &c. the Governor for reproach and blame, and their conduct contrasted with that of the majority of their colleagues, may afterwards appear; but it is remarkable that the Royal Commissioners should, in this respect, entirely omit all reference to them or to the author of the incriminated letter. Among the causes to which they ascribe the disturbances at Morant Bay, and into the origin of which it was their duty to inquire, "the nefarious proceedings" of these Baptist missionaries find no place. As we have seen, the Royal Commissioners trace to three chief causes, ...

Excerpt from The Tragedy of Morant Bay: A Narrative of the Disturbances in the Island of Jamaica in 1865 The following narrative owes its existence to the earnest desire of my family, and other friends, to possess an authentic account of the events, antecedent and consequent, to the Disturbances which took place at Morant Bay, in the Island of Jamaica, in the month of October, 1865. This desire I have endeavoured to gratify. My concern with the "Tragedy" will be found sufficiently explained in the Introduction and in the narrative itself. My personal recollections I have tested and supported by reference to public documents; but I am especially indebted to the suggestions and manuscript reminiscences of my dear friend, the Rev. D. J. East, for more than forty years a resident in the Island, and President of Calabar College, Kingston. I have also, in various parts, availed myself of papers and communications published by me in the periodicals of the time. It is 1865, post-slavery Jamaica, and its eastern town of Morant Bay, is on the verge of anarchy. A Baptist deacon leads the struggle to lift former slaves out of poverty, but he has a battle on his hands with dozens of his followers already killed, and an insensitive Governor about to declare martial law. Andrew Campbell, son of a white woman and a former slave, who committed suicide with another slave at the now infamous and legendary beauty spot Lover's Leap, on the southern coast thirty-five years earlier, vowed to his father to pursue the fight for the freedom he never enjoyed - even if it meant death. Andrew sets out to visit Morant Bay, a powder keg waiting to explode, but the opportunity the burning town provides for his political career is too much to ignore. His best friend has become his worst enemy, a foe he did not need at this precarious time. Furthermore, the women in Andrew's life - his mother, future bride and a secret admirer wrestle with the prospect of tragedy. Andrew is caught between the fires of injustice and the fires of passion and commitment. Andrew has a lot at stake. Time is running out. It is now or never; do or die in troubled Morant Bay.

In each rebellion, two ideological themes re-appear with remarkable tenacity. Bakan demonstrates the existence of "the religious idiom," an ideological current which uses Biblical teaching to reinforce and justify the struggle for greater rights. Also, Bakan shows that there is a belief in the justice and benevolence of the British Crown. Jamaican labourers have repeatedly looked to the Crown as a protector of lower-class interests as opposed to the interests of the local authorities, even when these authorities are appointed by the Crown. Bakan's synthesis of the Gramscian concepts of "willed" and "organic" ideology and of Rudé's notions of "inherent" and "derived" ideology move Ideology and Class Conflict in Jamaica beyond mere historical description. She describes Jamaican resistance as an aspect of willed ideology, with features that are both derived from middle- and ruling-class influences and inherent in the traditions of slaves, peasants, and workers. Each of the rebellions also contains an important organic element which influenced, and in turn was influenced by, the willed ideological aspects.
