This book brings a renewed critical focus to the history of novel writing, publishing, selling and reading, expanding its viewing beyond national territories. Relying on primary sources (such as advertisements, censorship reviews, publisher and bookstore catalogues), the book examines the paths taken by novels in their shifts between Europe and Brazil, investigates the flow of translations in both directions, pays attention to the successful novels of the time and analyses the critical response to fiction in both sides of the Atlantic. While the very existence of global literary studies as an institutionalised field is not yet fully established, the global turn in various disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences has been gaining traction in recent years. This book aims to contribute to the field of global literary studies with a more inclusive and decentralising approach. What can translations reveal about the global reception of any authorship? In Jane Austen Speaks Norwegian: The Challenges of Literary Translation, Marie Nedregotten Sørbø compares two novels and six translations of them. The discussion is entirely in English, as all Norwegian versions are back-translated. This study therefore lends itself to comparisons with other languages, and aims to fill its place as one component in a worldwide field of research; how Jane Austen is understood and transmitted. Moreover, this book presents a selection of pertinent issues for any translator, including abbreviation and elaboration, style and vocabulary, and censorship. 세책점(貰冊店): 돈을 받고 책을 빌려주던 가게 서울, 도쿄, 파리, 뉴욕, 스톡홀름, 리우데자네이루… 전 세계를 발로 누비며 찾은 세책 기록을 집대성하다 금단의 책 읽기를 모두의 즐거움으로 가져오다! 책을 골라 보는 희열, 함께 읽는 재미 그 정점에 있더 신흥 장르, ‘소설’! 『18세기의 세책사』는 세계 곳곳의 도서관과 고서점을 다니며 모은 18세기 세책 기록을 집대성한 결과물로, 책이 값비싸던 시절에 돈을 받고 책을 빌려주던 ‘세책’ 문화를 탐구한다. 세책업자들은 책을 대량으로 소장하며 사람들에게 빌려주었는데, 그 덕분에 독서 생활의 열외자였던 여성과 하층민이 너도나도 세책점으로 가서 책을 빌려다 읽었다. 독서가 누구나 누릴 수 있는 교양 활동으로 인식되면서 소설이 인기를 끌었고, 책을 읽을 수 있는 다양한 문화 공간이 생겨났다. 오늘날 북카페처럼 세책점에서는 다양한 문구류와 잡화를 책과 함께 팔기도 했고 여러 사람이 모여 책에 대한 정보를 교환하고 커피를 마시기도 했다. 세책점은 책방을 넘어 하나의 문화 아이콘으로 자리잡으며 책의 생산과 유통, 소비를 촉진시키고 독서의 대중화에 이바지했다. 대중 독서에 공헌한 세책점, 소설의 위상을 드높이고 독자와 작가를 이어주다 독서는 언제 어떻게 대중의 취미로 자리잡았을까? 18세기 전까지만 하더라도 독서는 지식인과 지배층을 중심으로 소수 특권층 남성만 누리는 학문적·종교적 수양 활동이었다. 하지만 18세기 들어 세책업자들이 책을 독점적으로 소유하며 저렴한 값에 사람들에게 빌려주면서 독서는 누구나 향유할 수 있는 여가 활동으로 인식되기 시작했다. 세책업자들은 책을 구매할 능력이 없는 중하층과 여성까지 고객으로 끌어들여 상업적 이윤을 추구했다. 새로운 독자의 취향을 고려해 오락적 독서물, 곧 소설과 역사서, 여행서, 교양서 등 다양한 책을 취급하여 고객들이 지적 호기심을 충족할 수 있는 책을 직접 골라 읽게 했다. 긴 호흡으로 사회와 삶의 문제를 다룬 산문 양식의 허구 서사에 흥미를 느끼며 통속문학을 대여하는 사람이 많아졌는데, 특히 여성 독자가 세책점에 자주 드나들며 소설을 빌려 읽는 단골이 되었다. 하지만 세책점의 영향력이 커지고 소설의 인기가 높아질수록 이를 비판하는 목소리도 커졌다. 책을 빌려 읽는 이가 많을수록 책을 많이 팔지 못해 작가와 출판사의 수입이 줄어든다며 세책업이 불법 거래임을 지적하는 목소리가 나왔다. 또 당시 사회 기득권 세력인 보수적 지식인과 종교인은 소설이 많이 팔리면서 점점 더 자극적이고 비도덕적인 내용을 담은 콘텐츠로 생산된다며 신랄하게 비판했다. 정약용은 소설에 빠져든 이는 책 읽기를 마칠 때까지 각자의 책무에 소홀해져 패가망신에 이른다고 비판했으며, 슬로바키아에서 익명의 평자는 가볍고 장난스러우며 허무하고 무가치한 소설이 사람들을 나쁜 길로 이끈다며 소설을 폄하했다. 그럼에도 소설의 인기는 식을 줄 몰랐고, 소설을 쓰는 작가가 늘고 소설가의 명성도 높아졌다. 또 세책점 간에 인기 소설을 다량 확보해 저렴한 값에 대여해주려는 경쟁이 치열해지면서 소설가와 출판사 역시 커다란 수익을 창출할 수 있었다. 책 유통과 영업에 열을 올린 세책업자는 독자와 작가 및 출판사 사이에서 든든한 연결고리가 되어주었다. 분책 신공, 큐레이션… 세책점의 전략 세책업자는 대중의 독서욕을 자극하는 데 힘을 쏟으며 저마다 다양한 방식으로 도서대여 영업을 하고 고객 맞춤형 서비스를 제공했다. 세책 문화가 일찍이 찬란하게 피어난 한국과 영국에서는 더 많은 사람에게 책을 여러 권 빌려주고자 장편소설을 분책해 내놓았다. 조선 향목동 세책점에서는 186권에 달하는 『윤하정삼문취록』, 117권짜리 『명주보월빙』, 10책짜리 『춘향전』, 10책의 『창선감의록』 등 국내에서 창작된 장편소설을 보유했다. 잉글랜드에서 무디 세책점은 무려 100여 년간 운영되며 약 750만 권을 거래했는데, 신뢰의 표시로 이곳의 상징인 페가수스 문양을 책 표지에 새겨놓은 서적들을 선보였다. 무디 세책점에서는 소설 대여 횟수를 늘려 수익을 더 얻고자 3부작 장편소설을 주로 취급했는데, 이 때문에 출판 시장에서 세 권짜리 장편소설이 주를 이뤘다. 그 수혜 작가인 월터 스콧은 자신의 작품 『웨이벌리』를 필두로 15년 동안 소설 14편을 출판하며 모두 3권짜리 장편소설로 출판했다. 세책업자들은 엄선한 도서 목록을 적은 카탈로그를 직접 제작하기도 했다. 아일랜드에는 1782년에 만든 70쪽짜리 카탈로그가 현전하는데, 인기 독서물인 로맨스가 압도적으로 많았고 역사서, 자서전, 여행서도 꽤 갖추고 있었다. 미국 뉴욕의 카리타 세책점에서는 1804년에 소설책 2천 권을 포함해 장서 수천 권이 수록된 카탈로그를 발행했다. 자메이카 킹스턴에서 가장 먼저 세책 영업을 시작한 윌리엄 에이크만은 1779년에 도서 목록 책자를 만들어 책 구독을 신청한 사람들에게 배달해주기까지 했다. 복합 문화 공간 세책점은 책만 대여하는 공간을 탈피해 복합 문화 공간으로 자리잡아갔다. 아일랜드 더블린에서 세책점을 운영한 리처드 화이트는 휴게실을 만들어 회원들이 이곳에서 신간에 대한 평판을 확인하고 각자 읽은 책과 신문 기사를 공유하면서 여론을 형성해나갈 수 있도록 했다. 프랑스 상층 고객들이 살던 지역의 세책점에서는 살롱 격을 갖춘 안락한 독서 클럽이 운영되었으며, 미국에서는 여성 손님들의 취향에 따라 사교 모임이 가능한 살롱처럼 인테리어를 하는 세책점도 생겨났다. 커피 하우스를 겸한 미국 세책점에서는 사람들이 커피를 마시고 신문을 돌려 읽으며 신문에 소개된 신간에 대한 정보를 교환했다. 오늘날 더이상 과거와 같은 세책점은 없지만 자꾸 눈길이 가는 각종 구독 서비스와 소셜 미디어 감상평과 추천이 현대판 세책점은 아닐까?

Le Brésil littéraire: histoire de la littérature brésilienne (1863), die erste Literaturgeschichte Brasiliens, ist das letzte große Werk des Wiener Romanisten Ferdinand Wolf. Das Buch wurde auf Deutsch verfasst, erschien jedoch nur in französischer Übersetzung. Anhand von bis jetzt unveröffentlichten Materialien, wie den zentralen Passagen des nie gedruckten Manuskripts Geschichte der brasilischen Nationalliteratur und ihrer Transkription, enthüllt Laura Rivas Gagliardi Wolfs literaturpolitisches Projekt hinsichtlich der Vorherrschaft des ‹deutschen Geistes› und der Habsburger Monarchie in der Welt – Brasilien miteinbezogen. Wolfs Geschichtsauffassung, welche die neokolonialen Ziele der Habsburger-Monarchie durch Sprache und Denken des Deutschen Idealismus legitimiert, wird durch den Vergleich mit der Übersetzung offengelegt. Die Autorin zeigt, dass Le Brésil littéraire im Zeichen der ideologischen Ansprüche einer transnationalen Elite entstand, die auf dynastischen Bündnissen basierte: Die (Literatur-)Geschichtsschreibung wird hier als Werkzeug eingesetzt, um eine Vergangenheit zu konstruieren und die Gegenwart zu steuern. Ihre Analyse der diskursiven Verkehrung der tatsächlichen Verhältnisse enthüllt, wie diese dazu dienen können, die eigene Herrschaftsposition zu begründen und zu festigen.
