Rosenborg Castle houses one of the finest treasure collections in Europe. The castle, which was built as a summer residence in Copenhagen, Denmark, by Christian IV of Denmark-Norway in the period 1606-1634, contains, among other things, the coronation regalia, jewelry, weapons, and objects of rock crystal, hardstones, ivory, and narwhal tusk. With Rosenborg's two oldest inventories from 1696 and 1718 as the point of departure, the present work charts the making of the treasure collection and its contents and offers a unique insight into the items of the collection in words and images. The Treasure Collection at Rosenborg Castle is the result of years of laborious research. The author, Jørgen Hein, combines his immense knowledge about the items and the historical facts of the treasure collection with a vivid and engrossing narrative, and with its three exclusive volumes the work offers a fascinating foray into the world of pomp and circumstance that surrounded the Danish-Norwegian kings in the period between 1500 and 1900.

This extraordinary catalogue presents five hundred items from one of the world's largest and finest collections of objects made from ivory and narwhal tusk, The Royal Danish Collection at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. In this stunning two-volume catalogue, author Jørgen Hein presents an impressive array of carved and turned works from Scandinavia and beyond. With more than seven hundred high-quality photographs, a lucid narrative and clear organization, Hein showcases the many artistic artefacts that with great skill were worked out of ivory and narwhal tusk in a crucial period of European history. The remarkable range of items discussed and presented - reflecting different artistic styles and techniques - includes caskets, statuettes, goblets, tankards and beakers, ink horns, chandeliers, cabinet clocks, medallions and reliefs, and much besides, all with richly detailed ornamentation, and most with dramatic depictions of historical, religious and particularly mythological motifs. In addition to describing each object in great detail, the entries include comparisons with similar items in international collections. The historical introduction offers an important backdrop to understanding the many works, while intriguing running biographies present many of the notable carvers and turners, such as the Frenchman Jean Cavalier, who visited the court, and those it employed, some of whom would win European fame, including Joachim Henne, Gottfried Wolffram, Magnus Berg and later Lorenz Spengler. The court's genuine interest in turning is also reflected in its hiring of professional artists to instruct the royals themselves at the lathe--jacquette.

As queen consort and dowager, Hedwig Eleonora (1636?1715) held a unique position in Sweden for more than half a century. As the dominant collector and patron of art and architecture in the realm, she left a strong mark on Swedish court culture. Her dynastic network among the Northern European courts was extensive, and this helped to make Sweden a major cultural center in Northern Europe in the later seventeenth century. This book represents the first major scholarly publication on the full range of Hedwig Eleonora?s endeavours, from the financing of her court to her place within a larger princely network, to her engagements with various cultural pursuits, to her public image. As the contributors show, despite her high profile, political position, and conspicuous patronage, Hedwig Eleonora experienced little of the animosity directed at many other foreign queens and regents, such as the Medici in France and Henrietta Maria in England. In this way, she provides a model for a different and more successful way of negotiating the difficulties of joining a foreign court; the analysis of her circumstances thus adds a substantial dimension to the study of early modern queenship. Presenting much new scholarship, this volume highlights one extremely significant early modern woman and her imprint on Northern European history, and fosters international awareness of the importance of early modern Scandinavia for European cultural history.
