Its teeth, scalpel-sharp. For the first time, the captive 20-ton Megalodon shark has tasted human blood, and it wants more… On the other side of the world, in the silent depths of the ocean, lies the Marianas Trench, where the Megalodon has spawned since the dawn of time. Paleobiologist Jonas Taylor once dared to enter this perilous cavern. He alone faced a Megalodon shark and cut its heart out. A new play inspired by the true story of a miner who became entombed in a tunnel during World War One. As the horror threatens to engulf him, he discovers another world beneath the mud and death. Setting off on an epic journey of salvation, the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur as he questions what’s real, what’s not and whether it even matters? The Trench blends Les Enfants Terribles’ acclaimed brand of physical storytelling, verse, puppetry and live music from Alexander Wolfe.

The last thing World War I soldier Sparks and his squad mates remember was being on the battlefield. Now, suddenly, they find themselves waking up in a mysterious trench, with no memory of how they arrived and unabating darkness enveloping them. Still hearing the sounds of battle, but somehow cut off from the world outside the trench, the group of seven fortifies the area as best they can as they hope for help to arrive. Sparks cannot shake the feeling that something about this place is wrong, that he’s missing something essential. But how can he tell his squad mates, including the stern Sergeant Malks, the aggressive Hendrickson, and the shaken young Cooley, about this lingering dread without sounding unhinged? Still more lies between Sparks and resolving the mystery of the trench than his apprehension and the unending darkness: a nameless, unspeaking soldier soon joins the squad in the trench, his allegiance unclear, but his eyes telling Sparks he knows something the squad doesn’t. Blending historical military fiction with suspenseful gothic horror, The Trench will captivate readers with its compelling mystery, haunting atmosphere, and poignant reflections on the nature of war.

The book details the history of the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshire, known as the Hull Pals, from September 1914 to May 1918. In around 150 pages it will provide viewers with answers to the questions the program will generate: Who were these men? What did they do? Which of them survived? Where did they really come from? Did they really live like this? Over 150 photographs, illustrations and maps record in detail the lives of these men; many of the illustrations have never been seen before.Known locally as "The Commercials" because they were a battalion of office workers, the 1400 men trained in England, were sent to fight the Turks in Egypt and then returned to spend nearly three years in the trenches of the Western Front. Their losses were heavy, with around one in four being killed.

Stand In The Trench Achilles written by Elizabeth Vandiver and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

Elizabeth Vandiver examines the ways in which British poets of the First World War used classical literature, culture, and history as a source of images, ideas, and even phrases for their own poetry. Vandiver argues that classics was a crucial source for writers from a wide variety of backgrounds, from working-class poets to those educated in public schools, and for a wide variety of political positions and viewpoints. Poets used references to classics both to support and to oppose the war from its beginning all the way to the Armistice and after. By exploring the importance of classics in the poetry of the First World War, Vandiver offers a new perspective on that poetry and on the history of classics in British culture.

Frederic Coleman returns to the front with the British Army in 1915 after his adventures in 1914, as recounted in his first reminiscences “From Mons to Ypres with General French”. Once again attached to the British cavalry, grand movements had ceased and the positional war of attrition, artillery and trenches would dominate from then to the end of the war. 1915 would see much hard fighting and the cavalry divisions would often be pressed into service in the trenches alongside the infantry. The early months of 1915 were a period of relative quiet, which allowed the author to tour and recount the devastated scenery of Ypres, St. Eloi and all along the line; he also records the effects of war on the civilian French and Belgian populations as he tours along in his car. However, as the year goes on, the Spring would see the second battle of Ypres and the advent of the use of poison gas. Hard pressed all along the line, Coleman paints vivid picture of the desperate measures undertaken by the British to hold on at all costs. An excellent First World War One memoir. Author — Frederic Abernethy Coleman 1876-1931 Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London: S. Low, Marston & co., limited, 1916. Original Page Count – xvi and 302 pages. Illustrations – numerous illustrations throughout.

"The First World War scarred an entire generation at the beginning of the twentieth century ... This book offers a simple guide to the war, looking at the events and the people who took part, through what was the setting for so much of the carnage; the trench. The trenches and the trench system along the Western Front in particular, were the killing fields. They formed a vast line of fortifications that locked the opposing armies together in a static, 400 mile zigzag of conflict from the channel coast down to the French border with Switzerland. Using his own diagrams and illustrations, ... Yorke explains the architecture of the trenches, with their command posts, tunnels, machine gun nests, duck boards and sleeping billets. There are chapters to explain tactics, weaponry and daily life ... special features on the introduction of new weapons of war, such as tanks, early aeroplanes and the first use of poison gas. The political events are described in basic outline, but there is a chapter on the legacy of the war's aftermath. There are summaries of the major battles and there is information about special places to visit in France and Belgium, including key museums, battle sites and memorials"--Back cover.
