“Victim of history,” “a martyr from behind the Iron Curtain,” “the Hungarian Gandhi” – these are just some of the epithets which people used to describe Cardinal Mindszenty, archbishop of Esztergom, who was the last Hungarian prelate to use the title of prince primate. Today, Mindszenty has been forgotten in most countries except for Hungary, but when he died in 1975, he was known all over the world as a symbol of the struggle of the Catholic Church against communism. Cardinal Mindszenty held the post of archbishop of Esztergom from 1945 until 1974, but during this period of almost three decades he served barely four years in office. The political police arrested him on December 26, 1948, and the Budapest People’s Court subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment. Based on the Stalinist practice of show trials, one of the accusations against Mindszenty, referring to his legitimist leanings, was his alleged attempt to re-establish Habsburg rule in Hungary. He regained freedom during the 1956 revolution but only for a few days. He was granted refuge by the US Embassy in Budapest between November 4, 1956 –September 28, 1971. In the fifteen years he spent at the American embassy enormous changes took place in the world while his personality remained frozen into the past. When in 1971 Pope Paul VI received the Hungarian foreign minister, he called Mindszenty “the victim of history”. His last years were spent free at last, but far away from his homeland. In Hungary, the Catholic believers eagerly await his beatification.

Memoirs written by József Mindszenty and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-01 with Religion categories.

These moving Memoirs reveal the full story of the legendary hero-priest József Mindszenty, who has come to be regarded as a symbol of Christian and national resistance to Communism. His brave, uncompromising leadership against the atheistic totalitarian government set the example and laid the foundation for the strong, outspoken Christian leadership and witness of the Church in Hungary today. Mindszenty was arrested, imprisoned, and physically and psychologically tortured by the Communist government. He spent eight years in solitary confinement. After the Hungarian uprising in 1956, he took refuge for fifteen years in the American embassy. This work is an extraordinary contribution to contemporary history and an eyewitness account of a Church and country under brutal Communist domination in the Cold War era. It also sets the record straight on the causes and circumstances of Mindszenty's departure from the embassy, his visit to the Vatican, and his deposition to the archiepiscopal office. Memoirs is an unforgettable reading experience.

I Was In Prison With Cardinal Mindszenty written by Fr. John Szabo and has been published by Pickle Partners Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-11 with History categories.

This book tells of the personal experiences by Father John Szabo, who spent five years in prison alongside Cardinal József Mindszenty (29 March 1892 - 6 May 1975), who was the Prince Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom, cardinal, and leader of the Catholic Church in Hungary from 2 October 1945 to 18 December 1973. For five decades, Cardinal Mindszenty “personified uncompromising opposition to fascism and communism in Hungary.” He was imprisoned by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party during World War II and, after the war, opposed communism and the communist persecution in his country. As a result, he was tortured and given a life sentence in a 1949 show trial that generated worldwide condemnation, including a United Nations resolution. After eight years in prison, he was freed in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and granted political asylum by the United States embassy in Budapest, where Mindszenty lived for the next fifteen years. He was finally allowed to leave the country in 1971. He died in exile in 1975 in Vienna, Austria. “In simple, understandable language, he has told in his own words of the harrowing experiences, of suffering, of bravery and death. The author’s style is intriguing in its directness and conversational approach.”—Brantley Burcham, Foreword

“Readable, stirring, and significant”—George N. Shuster, Saturday Review “To read this human story of a strong but simple man—Cardinal Mindszenty—is to be inspired to love better your God, your country and your fellowman, for it is a stirring story of faith and charity, of tolerance, loyalty and friendship.”—Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York József Cardinal Mindszenty (1892-1975) was the Prince Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom, cardinal, and leader of the Catholic Church in Hungary (1945-1973) who was imprisoned by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party during World War II and after the war, being a strong opponent of communism and the communist persecution in his country, was tortured and given a life sentence in a 1949 show trial that generated worldwide condemnation. Rather than a carefully written account of Cardinal Mindszenty’s career, here is an account of what the Cardinal heard and saw during the events which led up to the most sensational trial in Hungarian history...
