Excerpt from The Triennial Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1874 of Harvard College: Secretary's Report, No; 2, July, 1874 June, 1877 Classmates: The first Triennial Report of the Secretary is herewith submitted to you. I have endeavored to make it as full and correct a record as the answers sent me would allow, and have added such information as I could obtain from other sources. You will doubtless find many errors in the following pages, and will oblige me by calling them to my attention. To those who answered the questions, I hold myself responsible; but, where no replies have been made to my frequent and urgent solicitations, I disclaim all responsibility. The playful answers to the matrimonial interrogatory were many; but, as there was a general sameness in them, I have not deemed it expedient to print them, though by doing so the dull monotony of the record might perhaps have been relieved. The meagre replies, in many cases, have been discouraging, and while it was not expected that the short time since graduation would find you all arrived at the pinnacle of fame and fortune, I did hope to receive more satisfactory replies than some of the Class have made, by stating simply that their lives since graduation had been devoid of any interest to the Class. The usual statistics concerning marriages, and births of children, will be found chronicled at the end of the record of the Class. It is hoped that the Class in the next report will make a better showing in this respect. In the notices of the deceased members of the Class will be found brief abstracts of their lives, and tributes to their memory, prepared by their nearest friends. The condition of the Class Fund is very satisfactory. While some of the instalments are still unpaid, the subscriptions have, as a rule, been promptly paid, though in some cases a gentle reminder has been necessary. We cannot, however, feel any pride in the amount subscribed to the Class Subscription Fund, in comparison with what other classes have done. I would refer you to the statements in the report concerning these funds, for more detailed information. The Class Baby, too, claims your attention to such facts as to his birth and good fortune as are given in this report. Excerpt from Third Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1874 of Harvard College: July, 1874 June, 1880 Classmates: In presenting the following report, I have to thank all who sent me the desired information, and at the same time to remind those who had not the time or inclination to furnish me with the necessary material, that by their neglect and indifference, the record is incomplete. The only classmate who has strayed from the flock is McCann, of whom no information can be obtained. With this exception, the addresses or whereabouts of all who graduated in 1874 are known, and I again earnestly request to be notified of any change of address, as applications are often made for addresses which I am unable to give. The invitation, extended to those who did not graduate with us, to keep up their connection with the Class, has been responded to by over half the number, and they are included in the following record. It is probable that all who value their connection with the Class have responded. The accompanying record covers the time since graduation, as such a course is necessary in most cases in order to present an intelligent statement of the preparatory work for a profession or other occupation. Most of the Class are now settled, and such a repetition will be unnecessary in the future; but the reports already published must be preserved in order to make the future reports valuable. There are a few copies left of the first triennial report, which will be furnished upon application. The expense of these reports is very large, and so little new or interesting can be offered every three years, that I would suggest the propriety of discontinuing the triennial system. My own idea is, that if a report is published in 1884, the decennial of our graduation, and thereafter every five years, even the most enthusiastic of our number will be satisfied. Unless instructed to the contrary, this course will be adopted. The income from the Class Fund is now more than sufficient to meet the ordinary expenses of the Class. There are weighty objections to the use of this margin for dinners, even if the amount were sufficient to pay for an annual dinner. The matter will be submitted to the Class on Commencement Day, for such action as they may deem desirable. For more detailed information as to the condition of the Class and College Funds, I refer you to the statements in the following pages. During the last three years, two classmates have died, Aston and Knowles, and in this report will be found brief abstracts of their lives and tributes to their memory, prepared at my request by their intimate friends. The statistics of marriages and births show a decided improvement over the previous record. Forty-three of the regular members of the Class are known to be married.
