The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox grapples with the question of how one may hold together the ideals of systematic theology, apologetic proof, and theological paradox by building on the insights of Cornelius Van Til. Van Til developed an apologetic where one presupposes that the triune God exists, and then proves this Christian presupposition by demonstrating that philosophies that deny it are self-defeating in the specific sense that they rely on principles that only the Trinity, as the ultimate harmony of unity and diversity, can furnish. A question raised by Van Til's trademark procedure is how he can evade the charge that the apparent contradictions of the Christian faith render it equally self-defeating as non-Christian alternatives. This text argues that for Van Til, Christian paradoxes can be differentiated from genuine contradictions by the way that their apparently opposing elements discernibly require one another, even as they present our minds with an irresolvable conflict. And yet, Van Til failed to sufficiently vindicate the central Christian paradox--the doctrine of the Trinity--along the lines required by his system. Hence, the present text offers a unique proof that God can only exist as the pinnacle of unity-in-diversity, and as the ground of a coherent Christian system, if He exists as three, and only three, divine Persons.

Van Til developed an apologetic where one presupposes that the Triune God exists and has spoken authoritatively in Scripture, and then proves this Christian presupposition by demonstrating that the anti-Christian alternative is self-defeating in the specific sense that it betrays reliance on principles that only the Triune God, as a perfect harmony between unity and diversity, can furnish. Van Til deflects the criticism that theological paradoxes render Christianity self-defeating by arguing that although they cannot be resolved, they can be vindicated as true. Vindication involves showing that the opposing features of a paradox discernibly necessitate one another, and together perform an indispensable function to the Christian system. Yet, Van Til fails to thoroughly vindicate the Trinity by showing that the self-sufficient unity of God requires that he should be specifically tri-personal rather than generically multi-personal. Likewise, subsequent Van Tillians have failed to develop systematic vindications of Christian paradoxes according to the method so described. In an effort to overcome these shortcomings, this thesis supplies a demonstration that God's status as (a) his own source of self-distinction, and (b) his own personal context necessitates that he must be three, and only three persons, in order to be a self-sufficient unity. Our conclusion about the Trinity is necessitated by the covenantal perspective that permeates Scripture. And the Trinity in return is proven to be foundational for a covenantal worldview. This initial vindication of the Trinity supplies a refined vision of the Christian worldview in light of which other prominent Christian paradoxes are vindicated in systematic Succession, and variations on the anti-Christian perspective are dispelled as genuine contradictions.

This work is about philosophy and what makes a philosophy distinctively Christian in character, arguing that it is indeed possible for philosophy to be conceived of as first Christian and not just philosophy done by people that happen to be Christians. Christian philosophy is epistemologically self-conscious philosophy conducted in a manner honoring to the revelation of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. It is argued that philosophy should be transformative rather than just therapeutic or elucidatory. The author examines competing philosophical and scientific accounts from both the empiricist and rationalist schools, arguing they are coherent and successful only to the degree that they have imported, consciously or unconsciously, Christian transcendentals. To survey harsh criticisms against Brian Douglas McLaren (1956‒), readers gain the inaccurate impression that he is a heretical relativist who denies objective truth and logic. While McLaren’s inflammatory and provocative writing style is partly to blame, this study also suspects that his critics base much of their analyses on only small portions of his overall corpus. The result becomes a caricature of McLaren’s actual philosophy of religion. What is argued in this book is that McLaren’s philosophy of religion suggests a faith-based intersubjective relationship with the divine ought to result in an existential appropriation of Christ’s religio-ethical teachings. When subjectively internalized, this appropriation will lead to the assimilation of Jesus’ kingdom priorities, thereby transforming the believer’s identity into one that actualizes Jesus’ kingdom ideals. The hope of this book is that by tracing McLaren’s philosophy of Christian religion, future researchers will not only be able to comprehend (and perhaps empathize with) McLaren’s line of reasoning, but they will also possess a more nuanced discernment of where they agree and disagree with his overall rationale.

Cornelius Van Til's Doctrine of God and Its Relevance for Contemporary Hermeneutics seeks to answer the question, "What does Van Til have to do with hermeneutics?" It is argued that some of the most relevant concerns in the field of contemporary hermeneutics are similar to those addressed by Van Til in the area of apologetics. Van Til's approach involved a self-conscious consistency between method and theology proper in order to reason according to the Christian worldview found in Scripture. Just as one's apologetic method should be consistent with the theology revealed in the Bible, so also should one's hermeneutic. This work not only argues that Van Til has an important place in the hermeneutical discussion, but also demonstrates his place in terms of the main contours in his doctrine of God. In doing so, certain influences on evangelical hermeneutics are considered according to consistency with theology proper. Does apologetic method matter? Helmut Thielicke argues that the method should conform to its own message. He thus rejects traditional apologetic methodologies beholden to supposedly neutral scientific and philosophical paradigms. Seeking to reform Christian conversation, Thielicke discovers a lost way of persuasion, that is, the table-turning approach found in Christ’s conversations. Whenever Jesus is questioned, he seldom answers directly. For he refuses to allow the conversation to be framed by an autonomous mindset, and instead responds with a counterquestion. Christ’s style of persuasion—as the controller of the question—subverts his hearers’ presuppositions and challenges their unbelief. This approach is the reverse of the defensive, answer-giving mode of traditional apologetics. In view of renewing Christ’s method, Thielicke insists that the task of apologetics is “something which is always on the offensive and, far from giving ready-made answers to the doubtful questions of men, turns the tables by putting questions on its own account—aggressive, violent, radical questions—and striking straight to the hearts of men.” Christian conversation must integrate Christ’s method with his message in order to advocate the message itself. For it is not the world that questions Christ, but rather Christ questions the world.

Reformed Epistemology and the Structure of Knowledge: Cornelius Van Til and Alvin Plantinga on Belief develops a comparison of the epistemological formulations of Cornelius Van Til and Alvin Plantinga. Initial focus is placed on developing the extent to which Van Til’s work demonstrates a discernible theory of knowledge, and an argument is made for interpreting his epistemology as directly dependent on the conceptual resources of British Idealism. It is shown through Van Til’s appropriation of these resources that an idealist theory of knowledge is indispensable to, but not identifiable with, his distinct epistemological formulations. Attention then shifts to further clarification of these categories by way of Plantinga’s proper functionalist account of warrant. Here the underlying structure of knowledge for both Van Til and Plantinga is examined, demonstrating that Van Til’s formulations neither endorse an idealist coherentism nor exclude Plantinga’s foundationalism. Subsequent comparisons then consider arguments for meaningful similarity between each program, and give special consideration to the implications of such a comparison for contemporary discourse surrounding Van Til and Plantinga.
