Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,0, Panteion University, Athen (International, European & Area Studies), course: EU External Relations, language: English, abstract: In this paper the aim is to analyze that environment from the energy perspective, and to be more specific the role of the construction of the EastMed pipeline in transforming each of the countries involved in the project (Greece, Israel, Cyprus) as an energy hub for the transportation of natural gas to other EU countries. The Eastern Mediterranean is a very complex region concerning the international political scene from various perspectives. An environment of long-term conflicts and instability is the key to understand and analyze the geopolitical shifts, not only generally but also in the wider region regarding the neighboring states. Greece, Israel and Cyprus have signed a mutual agreement for the implementation of this Project of Common Interest under the European Neighborhood Policy Framework and it seems quite ambitious. Nevertheless, the challenges presented could not be omitted from this analysis, not only financial ones but also those occuring from regional state actors, such as Turkey, which has adopted an overall negative stance towards the Project. In addition the European gradual decarbonization policy seems to further hinder the implementation of the pipeline via the EU Green Deal initiative, due to its plans which aim to the energy transition towards a cleaner, greener, environmentally sustainable future based on the model of the circular economy. Therefore, this paper initially presents an overview of the European Neighborhood Policy at the first chapter, then it proceeds to analyze the stance of each state involved in the tripartite cooperation as well as the particular challenges each one deals with at the second chapter, and last but not least it concludes at the third chapter with the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on the Project and the shift of the European energy policy towards achieving the environmental viability by using the EU Green Deal Plan. Finally, an Annex at the end of this paper is provided in order to facilitate the reader's understanding of the facts here presented.

Written by leading academics in their respective fields, this book addresses key developments in the area and argues that the Eastern Mediterranean should be viewed as a distinct region. Particular emphasis is given to the initiatives undertaken by Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey; the role played by the United States and Russia; and the issues of energy, migration, and Islamic terrorism. Bringing together relevant information and theoretical debates, this book will be of interest to graduate students and academics studying international relations and politics in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as policymakers and journalists who want to have a clearer understanding of developments in the region.

This book uses empirical research to introduce the relationship between nationalism, militarism and masculinity. The co-constitution between these three factors is susceptible to change and hinders reconciliation, according to the author. Drawing on the case of Cyprus, a country in conflict with Turkey, Efthymiou reveals how nationalism, militarism and masculinity were constructed after the war, and re-adapted following the opening of internal borders and European Union accession. Nationalism, Militarism and Masculinity in Post-Conflict Cyprus draws on rich field-research, with soldiers and officers in army barracks, politicians such as former President of Republic of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides, leaders of radical far-right movements and the Greek Cypriot public. The book offers invaluable insight into the application of nationalism, militarism and masculinity in governmental policy including by the Cyprus Defence Ministry, and will be of interest to students and scholars in sociology, gender studies, peace studies, security studies, politics and international relations, as well as governments and NGOs.

It can be said that "Energy is Politics". In three parts - 1) Energy Economy; 2) Finance; and 3) Geostrategy - academics and practitioners address both economic and political questions and present cases from several countries. This is the sixth volume in a series on energy organized by the Centre for Energy and Value Issues (CEVI). The previous volumes in the series were: Financial Aspects in Energy (2011), Energy Economics and Financial Markets (2012), Perspectives on Energy Risk (2014), Energy Technology and Valuation Issues (2015) and Energy and Finance (2016).

Gradually since 2003, Turkey's autocratic leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sought to make Turkey a great power -- in the tradition of past Turkish leaders from the late Ottoman sultans to Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Here the leading authority Soner Cagaptay, author of The New Sultan -- the first biography of President Erdogan -- provides a masterful overview of the power politics in the Middle East and Turkey's place in it. Erdogan has picked an unorthodox model in the context of recent Turkish history, attempting to cast his country as a stand-alone Middle Eastern power. In doing so Turkey has broken ranks with its traditional Western allies, including the United States and has embraced an imperial-style foreign policy which has aimed to restore Turkey's Ottoman-era reach into the Arabian Middle East and the Balkans. Today, in addition to a domestic crackdown on dissent and journalistic freedoms, driven by Erdogan's style of governance, Turkey faces a hostile world. Ankara has nearly no friends left in the Middle East, and it faces a threat from resurgent historic adversaries: Russia and Iran. Furthermore, Turkey cannot rely on the unconditional support of its traditional Western allies. Can Erdogan deliver Turkey back to safety? What are the risks that lie ahead for him, and his country? How can Turkey truly become a great power, fulfilling a dream shared by many Turks, the sultans, Ataturk, and Erdogan himself?

The Eastern Mediterranean In Transition written by Spyridon N. Litsas and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Political Science categories.

The wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean is in transition. What is being evinced is a situation of continuous volatility, centering on developments such as the ’Arab Spring,’ the Greek sovereign debt crisis, Islamic terrorism, the continuation of deadlock over the Cypriot and Palestinian Issues, significant energy finds in the Levantine Basin, concerns over nuclear proliferation and, more recently, the Syrian Civil War. At a systemic level, the move towards a regional multipolar reality has also contributed to volatility by creating a crescendo of antagonisms between all the major international actors who continuously strive for more influence, power and prestige. This collective project by leading experts represents a unique combination of International Theory and International Politics analysis that deals exclusively with the wider Eastern Mediterranean. It scrutinizes in a multidimensional manner the current geostrategic and geopolitical conditions that include the latest domestic socio-political events, as well as the active involvement of the Great Powers in the region. This book should be of interest to academics, decision-makers and a general reading public focusing on a significant and influential region in flux.
