But first, Cavaillon?bowery Cavaillon?famous for its melons. Dumas presented the town with a set of his works on the condition that it should pay him an annual tribute of its fruit; but no such material attraction drew us to the place, nor even the archaeological interest of the trinmphal arch and the cathedral. Gui, the lord of Cavaillon in the days of Magna Charta (1215), was not only a diplomat and soldier but a troubadour. His poems thrill yet with the keen passions of the time, and the scorn of cowardice and treason. They sound the trumpet call to battle, and the cry for help against overwhelming odds; and, aided by their living colors, we can picture the bold knight riding all day in harness, giving blows and taking them from the French invaders, snatching a hasty supper while the attack waned, and then pacing to and fro till morning between the wall and the moat of his castle to guard against the chance of a night assault.
