For the millions of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Joseph Smith was an inspired prophet of God. For many other millions, he was a consummate con man, the founder of an authoritarian cult that was discredited even in his own time. This new historical novel gives voice to Joseph Smith's long-forgotten sister, Sophronia, who tells the story of their shared lives from early childhood to his violent death. She was there when he saw God and uncovered the golden plates that became the Book of Mormon. She was a witness to his first experiments with polygamy, and to the persecutions that followed. When Joseph was taken to his death in the Carthage jail, it was Sophronia and two of his wives who rode to his rescue. The book is also a story of family and friendship. Sophronia's reliance on her strong-willed mother Lucy lasted well into adulthood, and her affection for her young brother Don Carlos lasted until his tragically early death. The happiness that she found with two husbands was brief, and often troubled, but her one surviving daughter was the joy of her life. Her circle of female friends was always of vital importance to her. Sophronia Smith was a woman of uncommon independence for her time and did not hesitate to speak the truth to the men around her. Although her brother was idolized by his followers, she loved him without blindness to his faults. In an age dominated by religious controversy, her own faith in the Mormon prophet was contradictory and deeply emotional.

Joseph Smith made several attempts to write his history. The work published as the "History of Joseph Smith" in the Times and Seasons,is the most extensive account to be made publicly available. While parts or portions of this history have been used in various forms since it was first published in 1842, the full extent of this work has largely gone unnoticed. Joseph made this history in consequence of "many reports which have been put in circulation by evil designing persons". He felt "induced to write this history, so as to disabuse the public mind, and put all enquirers [sic] after truth into possession of the facts as they have transpired in relation both to myself and the church, so far as I have such facts in possession". When these words were first written in 1838, the need was great. I believe the need to allow Joseph to share this history to also be great today. It is the intent of this work to respect what Joseph did then and make this history more readily available to all inquirers after truth today. This book is an effort to take precisely what was put into print as the "History of Joseph Smith" in the Times and Seasons and make it available in a single volume. Effort has been made for this record to be true to what was published in the Times and Seasons as the "History of Joseph Smith" without adding to or taking away from that work. Researchers should defer to copies of the original Times and Seasons to resolve any differences.

In the early spring of 1820, Joseph Smith, Jr. claimed to have had an experience unlike any other ever recorded in human history. In his own words he states: "When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!" (JSH 1:17) Joseph Smith testified to the world that two resurrected human beings presented themselves before him, whom the rest of the world would recognize as God, the Father and His Son, Jesus, the Christ. Later in 1823, three years after receiving what has become known as the First Vision, Joseph was again visited by a resurrected human being, who called himself Moroni: "He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people. He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fullness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants." (JSH 1:33-34) In both of these unprecedented experiences, Joseph Smith testified to the world that there are human beings who have once lived upon this earth, who died, and who were brought back to life (resurrected) as advanced and eternal human beings. These were the first recorded events that laid the foundation for a religious belief system known throughout the world as the Mormons-the largest and most powerful faction of Mormonism being the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Joseph's personal witness of these two events established an order and protocol of how divine intervention takes place between advanced and eternal human beings and the mortals upon this earth. With his own testimony, Joseph Smith outlined the official and ONLY authorized manner in which truth can be established upon this earth. In order for real truth to be established, a fully resurrected being must return to the earth and initiate its establishment. Without following this protocol, no other work can be deemed official and authorized. Ironically, since Joseph Smith, not even one of the mainstream Mormon/LDS leaders has claimed to have been visited by a resurrected human being and received instruction face-to-face from an advanced and eternal resurrected being. Regardless of how Mormon/LDS faith has deteriorated over the years since Joseph Smith, there has been ONLY one man who has ever claimed to have full access, not only to advanced and eternal human beings (ministering angels), but to the Three Nephite Apostles and to John the Beloved himself. That man is Christopher! Through Christopher, the resurrected Joseph Smith, Jr. will now finally disclose his true identity to the world and explain the real truth about what happened from the time that he as a young boy, first inquired into the concept of religious thought, to the time of his martyrdom in Carthage, Illinois on June 27, 1844. Through Christopher, and under the direct auspices of the resurrected Joseph, the real truth behind the establishment of an organized church, priesthood, ordinances, and everything else associated with his name will be revealed in its fullness. Without Disclosing My True Identity-The Authorized and Official Biography of the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. will answer all questions about the man and the religion that came forth from his time on earth.

The core of Mormon belief was a conviction about actual events. The test of faith was not adherence to a certain confession of faith but belief that Christ was resurrected, that Joseph Smith saw God, that the Book of Mormon was true history, and tht Peter, James, and John restored the apostleship. Mormonism was history, not philosophy. It is as history that Richard L. Bushman analyzes the emergence of Mormonism in the early nineteenth century. Bushman, however, brings to his study a unique set of credentials - he is both a prize-winning historian and a faithful member of the Latter-day Saints church. For Mormons and non-Mormons alike, then, his book provides a very special perspective on an endlessly fascinating subject. Building upon previous accounts and incorporating recently discovered contemporary sources, Bushman focuses on the first twenty-five years of Joseph Smith's life - up to his move to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1831. Bushman shows how the rural Yankee culture of New England and New York - especially evangelical revivalism, Christian rationalism, and folk magic - both influenced and hindered the formation of Smith's new religion. Mormonism, Bushman argues, must be seen not only as the product of this culture, but also as an independent creation based on the revelations of its charismatic leader. In the final analysis, it was Smith's ability to breathe new life into the ancient sacred stories and to make a sacred story out of his own life which accounted for his own extraordinary influence. By presenting Smith and his revelations as they were viewed by the early Mormons themselves, Bushman leads us to a deeper understanding of their faith.''A brilliant piece of research and writing by one of America's top historians. It is written with style and felicity, and it deals with all the difficult topics that must be probed in describing and interpreting the controversial early history of Mormonism. It is simply an outstanding work.''--Leonard J. The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is also the history of the opening and progress of the Dispensation of the fullness of Times; and as that dispensation bears an important relation to all dispensations which have preceded it, let us here ascertain in what that relation consists. By doing so we shall have a better appreciation of the full import of those events which make up the history of the Church. In publishing the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is felt that a solemn duty is being performed to the Saints and to the world. The events which make up the history of the Church in this age are the most important that history can chronicle. It is due therefore both to the Saints themselves and to the world that a faithful and complete history of the facts in which the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had its origin, together with the events through which it was subsequently developed, and all the circumstances, experiences and trials through which it passed be made known to mankind. Elder B. H. Roberts consulted diaries, printed sources, and remembrances of Church members to prepare a history of the Church that centered mainly on the life of Joseph Smith. Before it was published, Elder Anthon H. Lund and President Joseph F. Smith read and approved the work. The resulting seven volumes, over forty-five hundred pages, known as the History of the Church has since become a great resource to Church members and historians alike.
