Seeing that it is one of the foundations upon which our country is built, it is no surprise that most Americans are familiar with the Declaration of Independence. However, much misinformation about it persists. For instance, it was only adopted, not signed, on July 4, 1776. Explanations of the history behind this key document are presented in accessible text and will help readers to sort out fact from fiction.

The venerated emigrants who first planted America, and most of their distinguished successors who laid the foundation of our civil liberty, have found a resting place in the peaceful grave. But the virtues which adorned both these generations; their patience in days of suffering; the courage and patriotic zeal with which they asserted their rights; and the wisdom they displayed in laying the foundations of our government; will be held in lasting remembrance.Table of Contents: John HancockSamuel AdamsJohn AdamsRobert Treat PaineElbridge GerryJosiah BartlettWilliam WhippleMatthew ThorntonStephen HopkinsWilliam ElleryRoger ShermanSamuel HuntingtonWilliam WilliamsOliver WolcottWilliam FloydPhilip LivingstonFrancis LewisLewis MorrisHenry MisnerRichard StocktonJohn WitherspoonFrancis HopeinsonJohn HartAbraham ClarkRobert MorrisBenjamin RushBenjamin FranklinJohn MortonGeoge ClymerJames SmithGeorge TaylorJames WilsonGeorge RossCaesar RodneyGeorge ReadThomas M'KeanSamuel ChaseWilliam PacaThomas StoneCharles CarrollGeorge WytheRichard Henry LeeThomas JeffersonBenjamin HarrisonThomas Nelson, JunFrancis Lightfoot LeeCarter BraxtonWilliam HooperJoseph HewesJohn PennEdward RutledgeThomas HeywardThomas Lynch, JunArthur MiddletonButton GwinnettLyman HallGeorge Walton

Excerpt from the book: The treaty with France in 1778 had declared that war should be continued until the independence of the United States had been established, and it appeared as if that were the main purpose of the alliance. For her own good reasons France had dragged Spain into the struggle. Spain, of course, fought to cripple Great Britain and not to help the United States. In return for this support France was pledged to assist Spain in obtaining certain additions to her territory.

The Founding Fathers are essential to the American narrative. Unfortunately, popular histories have a tendency to gloss over unpleasant truths and harmonize the discordant voices of the past. This book looks beyond powdered wigs and polished portraits to find the human founders of the United States. Multiple and minority perspectives are taken into account, and well-worn stories of the founding era are revisited, from the complex issues of slavery and religion to the myth of George Washington's wooden teeth. Thoughtful text and fun sidebars illuminate primary sources and invite readers to think critically about these familiar figures in American history.

Audisee® eBooks with Audio combine professional narration and sentence highlighting for an engaging read aloud experience! "All men are born free and equal." Everybody knows about the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence in 1776. But the founders weren't the only ones who believed that everyone had a right to freedom. Mumbet, a Massachusetts enslaved person, believed it too. She longed to be free, but how? Would anyone help her in her fight for freedom? Could she win against the richest man in town? Mumbet was determined to try. Mumbet's Declaration of Independence tells her story for the first time in a picture book biography, and her brave actions set a milestone on the road toward ending slavery in the United States. "The case is fascinating, emphasizing the destructive irony at the heart of the birth of America and making Mumbet an active and savvy architect of her own release, and this is likely to spur much discussion." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

This is a comprehensive history of one of the greatest mysteries in American history--did Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, declare independence from Great Britain more than a year before anyone else? According to local legend, on May 20, 1775, in a log court house in the remote backcountry two dozen local militia leaders met to discuss the deteriorating state of affairs in the American colonies. As they met, a horseman arrived bringing news of the battles of Lexington and Concord. Enraged, they unanimously declared Mecklenburg County "free and independent" from Great Britain. It was known as the "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence" ("MecDec" for short). A local tavern owner named James Jack delivered the MecDec to the Continental Congress, who found it "premature." All of this occurred more than a year before the national Declaration of Independence. But is the story true? The evidence is mixed. John Adams believed the MecDec represented "the genuine sense of America" while Thomas Jefferson believed the story was "spurious." This book sets out all of the evidence, pro and con.
