Spina bifida is the most common of a group of birth defects called neural tube defects. Spina bifida is a defect in the development of the vertebrae, leaving part of the spinal cord exposed. More than 70,000 people today live with spina bifida, according to the Spina Bifida Association. Scientists aren’t sure exactly why people get spina bifida, but they believe it has to do with a combination of genes and the environment. One of the best ways to prevent spina bifida is to take folic acid vitamins for at least one month before getting pregnant and during the pregnancy. In this book, students learn about the history of spina bifida, genetics and inheritance of traits, genetic mutations, who can have spina bifida and how it is treated, and the medical advances in research.

WHAT IS SPINA BIFIDA? Spina bifida is one of the most commonly occurring inborn issues (delivery defects) in the United States. It's resulting from the incomplete development of the fetus' backbone at some stage in the first month of being pregnant. (The term "spina bifida" means "split backbone.") Spina bifida is typically apparent at birth. Spina bifida occurs throughout the first 28 days of pregnancy, often before a girl knows she's pregnant. The situation is a type of neural tube disorder (NTD). This sounds horrifying, and some forms of spina bifida are very extreme. But it's essential to recognize that the situation varies broadly in degree. Maximum instances are so moderate that they don't have any signs or symptoms and don't even want treatment (this takes place with spina bifida occulta, or "hidden spina bifida"). However, babies born with a more severe kind of this disease have open lesions on their backbone, which cause tremendous harm to nerves and the spinal cord. The hole may be repaired through a surgical procedure, but the nerve damage isn't resolved, and that causes everlasting disability. Spina bifida can occur everywhere along the backbone but is most often discovered inside the small of the lower back or further down. WHAT'S SPINA BIFIDA OCCULTA? Spina bifida occulta is a condition where there is an opening bureaucracy among the small bones (vertebrae) of your spine (spine). Spina bifida occulta is mild and is the most common sort of spina bifida. Spina bifida is a condition present at birth (a congenital delivery disorder) due to your spine forming incorrectly all through fetal development. The word "occulta" means "hidden." Spina bifida occulta is likewise called "hidden spina bifida" due to the fact that a small layer of pores and skin covers the opening of your spinal vertebrae. WHO DOES SPINA BIFIDA OCCULTA HAVE AN EFFECT ON? Spina bifida occulta can affect anyone. Some people are at a higher risk of getting a child with spina bifida occulta if: A woman has a loss of folic acid (vitamin B9) throughout pregnancy. Folic acid is a vitamin (B9) discovered in leafy vegetables, beans, whole grains, and several other ingredients. You've got records of spina bifida in your family (genetic). Mothers and fathers who become pregnant have situations like diabetes or obesity. Your child has a genetic condition like Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau's syndrome. A parent is taking antiseizure drug treatments like valproate or carbamazepine. If you plan on becoming pregnant, speak to your healthcare provider about the drug treatments you currently take or if you want to learn more about your genetic family records via a genetic check. Spina bifida occulta is the most common kind of spina bifida, and the condition influences 10% to 20% of the U.S. population.
