Two significant points are usually overlooked when tourism demand is estimated through gravity models. First, international tourism activity is examined without the aid of economic theory. Consequently, this study uses a utility function to evaluate the tourism demand model. Secondly, gravity model estimations are not done via the appropriate estimation methods. This is because estimations give rise to problem of heteroscedasticity. Therefore, this study utilizes the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) method, which accounts for the heteroscedasticity problem. Although our results are similar to the findings in prior literature, it is possible to get different results in terms of tourism demand.

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between tourism demand in Turkey and the exchange rate. Engle's (2002) two stage dynamic conditional correlation GARCH (DCC-GARCH) model is used to estimate the conditional correlations. The analysis of tourism demand from the Eurozone and the USA to Turkey indicates that tourism demand and the exchange rate are positively related. The results also show no clear positive relationship for tourism demand from the UK. In conclusion, tourism destinations are more popular to people from countries when their currency is more valuable.

This thesis examines the importance of tourism in the Turkish economy, demand and supply conditions as well as the Turkish government's efforts to develop this sector by encouraging domestic and foreign investment. A new application of the Markowitz portfolio diversification model established that tourism stabilised the foreign currency receipts of Turkey and four other Mediterranean countries during the period 1978-1989. Moreover, the results of an econometric demand analysis supported the assumption that the government spearheaded the development of tourism in Turkey. In fact, the fixed capital investment in this area, reflecting improvements in the tourism product, appeared to be the most important factor boosting the demand for Turkish tourism while income levels in tourist generating countries and cost of tourism in Turkey had considerably less influence. The low cost in Turkey made it relatively immune to diminishing travel demand during recession periods. The questionnaire survey revealed that 40 per cent of the multinational hotel chains were operated by management contracts with a minority equity and investors were increasingly trying to avoid risk related to equity. While the growing popularity of Turkey as a tourist destination was the most important motivation, foreign investors also mentioned the government's investment incentives and opportunities of profit in a growing market as factors influencing their decisions. The study also attempted to link the findings of the survey to the modern theories of the multinational enterprise. While other theories give partial or temporal explanations of foreign investment, the eclectic paradigm, combining the theories of internalisation, location and competitive advantages, provides the comprehensive framework for explaining foreign.
