This book is first and foremost the story of the enginemen and their steeds which brought the steam era to an end on the Southern. It is therefore primarily about locomotive performance but enlivened by stories about how that was achieved and also about the band of young men who followed the exploits of men and machines, day and night over those last two years. It includes a substantial contribution from an ex-Nine Elms fireman and many anecdotes about the enginemen. The book contains about eighty train running logs plus records of lineside observations, detailed descriptions of the work covered by the locomotives and crews from the various steam motive power depots, copies of the actual duty rosters posted at Nine Elms, together with a unique collection of about 150 black and white and color images taken in the 1965 to 1967 period covered by this book. It is the most comprehensive story of those last few years yet produced, and it is truly 'The Untold Story', a fine tribute to the enginemen who performed near miracles with their doomed and run-down fleet of locomotives, in the very different world of the mid-1960's railway, unequaled anywhere else in Britain.

The Southern Railway may not have been the most glamorous of the 'Big Four' companies that emerged from the grouping of 1923, but it was the great innovator. In the 1930s the Southern pioneered the first main-line electrification and created the largest electrified suburban railway network in the world. It was also one of the few to offer regular departures and the first to run true international services, introducing the 'Night Ferry' through-trains from London to Paris using special ferries. Forming part of a series, along with The GWR Handbook, The LMS Handbook and The LNER Handbook, this new edition provides an authoritative and highly detailed reference of information about the Southern Railway.

"Edward Loughry was only twenty-four when the Baldwin Locomotive Works sent their young engineer across half the world to bring a cargo of four little steam engines and six double deck carriages to Sydney. He sailed aboard SS Dryad from New York harbour on 15 May 1879 and reached Sydney on September 3.... The 'Americanisation' of Sydney, according to some observers, dated from Loughry's arrival with the Baldwin trains." —from American Steam on Australian Rails Railways, according to the history books, were a British invention, and as a result, English companies were quick to capture a huge part of the world market. So how did American steam locomotives come to play a major role in rail transportation in 19th-century Australia, then a British colony? In American Steam on Australian Rails, David Burke tells the fascinating story of Yankee ingenuity and the companies that challenged an English monopoly. While purchasers of equipment for Australian lines argued about the virtues and failings of the American machine, most had to admit that the engines made for the Wild West worked equally well riding the curves, grades, and light rails of outback Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales. Burke provides copious descriptions of the locomotives themselves, from early models with ornate domes, long cowcatchers, and wooden cabs, right through to the trim 59 class 2-8-2 imported from Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton by New South Wales in the twilight of steam. Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photos and illustrations, American Steam on Australian Rails documents the progress of hundreds of Yankee engines across the vastness of a new continent as they became part of a grand Australian railroad adventure. Published in association with Australian Railway Historical Society.

British Railways In The 1960s Western Region written by Geoff Plumb and has been published by Pen and Sword Transport this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-30 with Transportation categories.

An evocative collection of photographs covering the Western Region during a decade of great change. After the Second World War, Britain’s railways were rundown and worn out, requiring massive investment and modernization. The “Big Four” railway companies were nationalized from 1948, and the newly formed British Railways embarked on a program of building new “Standard” steam locomotives to replace older types. These started to come on stream from 1951. This program was superseded by the 1955 scheme to dieselize and electrify many lines, and so the last loco of the “Standard” types was built in 1960—and the steam locomotives had been swept entirely from the BR network by 1968. This series of books is a photographic account of those last few years of the steam locomotives, their decline and replacement during the transition years. This volume covers much of the Western Region, as photographed by the author in his youth, often with limited time or disposable income but always with a passion for his project. While not a complete history, it offers a vivid illustration of how things were in the relatively recent past and imparts information through comprehensive captions, which give a sense of occasion—often a “last run” of a locomotive type or over a stretch of line about to be closed down. In simple terms, it’s a look at a period not so long ago but now gone forever. Praise for the series “Profusely illustrated . . . impressively informative.” —Midwest Book Review “An evocative collection of views of the twilight of BR steam.” —Railway Modeller
