When fifty-year-old millionaire Henry Vandalay is found stabbed to death on the cement floor of his shop, and the Tarot Death card is found in the ancient Keltic layout spread neatly beside his cold body, Henry's beautiful young wife, Katherine, hires numerologist, Samantha Blackwell, to find her husband's killer. Katherine invites Sam to the Vandalay mansion for the weekend. During an elegant dinner at the mansion, Sam is visited by a vision of a floating dead man who supplicates her with decomposing arms. The tension mounts when she is awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of footsteps in the hallway. She peers out of her bedroom doorway to find an apparition moving down the grand staircase. The discovery of a hidden pagan altar lures Sam even deeper into the convoluted relationships in the drafty house, and into the business dealings of Henry Vandalay. The next day, as a small circle of people gather for the reading of the will, terrible secrets are revealed. Is Sam getting too close to the killer? Will she be next? Only her steely resolve propels her to unravel the mystery hidden in the Tarot layout, and reveal the identity of the true killer.

Anyone who has ever tried to present a rather abstract scientific subject in a popular manner knows the great difficulties of such an attempt. Either he succeeds in being intelligible by concealing the core of the problem and by offering to the reader only superficial aspects or vague allusions, thus of deluding the reader by arousing in him the deceptive illusion of comprehension; Or else he gives an expert account of the problem, but as the untrained reader is unable to follow the exposition and becomes discouraged from reading any further. If these two categories are omitted from todays popular scientific literature, surprisingly little remains. But the little left is very valuable indeed. It is very important that the public is given an opportunity to experience-consciously and intelligently-the efforts and results of scientific research. It is not sufficient that each successive progression is taken up, elaborated, and applied by a few specialists in the field. Restricting the body of knowledge to a small group deadens the philosophical spirit of these people and leads to spiritual poverty. THE CORPSES OF TIMES GENERATIONS represents a valuable contribution to popular scientific writing. The main ideas to Theory are extremely well presented. Moreover, the presents state of our knowledge in which the paradigms of science are aptly characterized. Mr. Kosciejew shows how the criterial growth of our factual knowledge, with the striving for a unified conception comprising all empirical data, has led to the present situation which is characterized -despite all successes by an uncertainty concerning the choice of the basic theoretical concept.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 licence. This book analyses the different types of post-execution punishments and other aggravated execution practices, the reasons why they were advocated, and the decision, enshrined in the Murder Act of 1752, to make two post-execution punishments, dissection and gibbeting, an integral part of sentences for murder. It traces the origins of the Act, and then explores the ways in which Act was actually put into practice. After identifying the dominance of penal dissection throughout the period, it looks at the abandonment of burning at the stake in the 1790s, the rapid decline of hanging in chains just after 1800, and the final abandonment of both dissection and gibbeting in 1832 and 1834. It concludes that the Act, by creating differentiation in levels of penalty, played an important role within the broader capital punishment system well into the nineteenth century. While eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century historians have extensively studied the ‘Bloody Code’ and the resulting interactions around the ‘Hanging Tree’, they have largely ignored an important dimension of the capital punishment system – the courts extensive use of aggravated and post-execution punishments. With this book, Peter King aims to rectify this neglected historical phenomenon.

This book describes how forensic doctors’ registrations have been used to describe different types of deaths in the Netherlands. The book consists of two parts. Part 1 describes the gradual increase in the number of suicides where helium is used combined with an exit-bag since the publication of the book ‘Uitweg’ published in 2013 in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. It recounts which kind of individuals choose this method, as well as which individuals choose to use a barbiturate overdose. It also describes in which cases the forensic physician in the presence of the Crime Scene Technicians investigates a suicide. Part 2 describes which individuals had a risk of lying unnoticed dead in a home for more than two weeks (‘domestic setting corpse’) and how common this phenomenon is in the four largest cities in the Netherlands. In addition, it describes whether preventive measures against loneliness in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam, deployed after the media attention following the discovery of a 10-year-old housing corpse in Rotterdam, led to a decrease in the number of domestic setting corpses. This study shows that there is no difference in the number of domestic setting corpses before and after the implementation of the preventive measures.

In Walking Corpses, Timothy S. Miller and John W. Nesbitt contextualize reactions to leprosy in medieval Western Europe by tracing its history in Late Antique Byzantium, which had been confronting leprosy and its effects for centuries. Integrating developments in both the Latin West and the Greek East, Walking Corpses challenges a number of misperceptions about attitudes toward the disease, including that theologians branded leprosy as punishment for sin (rather, it was seen as a mark of God's favor); that Christian teaching encouraged bans on the afflicted from society (in actuality, it was Germanic customary law); or that leprosariums were prisons (instead, they were centers of care, many of them self-governing). Informed by extensive archival research and recent bioarchaeology, Walking Corpses also includes new translations of three Greek texts regarding leprosy, while a new preface to the paperback edition updates the historiography on medieval perceptions and treatments of leprosy.
