World War II was a watershed event for the people of the former Japanese colonies of Micronesia. The Japanese military build-up, the conflict itself, and the American occupation and control of the conquered islands brought rapid and dramatic changes to Micronesian life. Whether they spent the war in caves and bomb shelters, in sweet potato fields under armed Japanese guard, or in their own homes, Micronesians who survived those years recognize that their peoples underwent a major historical transformation. Like a typhoon, the war swept away a former life. The Typhoon of War combines archival research and oral history culled from more than three hundred Micronesian survivors to offer a comparative history of the war in Micronesia. It is the first book to develop Islander perspectives on a topic still dominated by military histories that all but ignore the effects of wartime operations on indigenous populations. The authors explore the significant cultural meanings of the war for Island peoples, for the events of the war are the foundation on which Micronesians have constructed their modern view of themselves, their societies, and the wider world. Their recollections of those tumultuous years contain a wealth of detail about wartime activities, local conditions, and social change, making this an invaluable reference for anyone interested in twentieth-century Micronesia. Photographs, maps, and a detailed chronology will help readers situate Micronesian experiences within the broader context of the Pacific War.

It wasnÕt rockets or artillery that came through the skies one week during the war. It was the horrific force of nature that suddenly put both sides in awe. As an unofficial truce began, questions and emotions battled inside every air crewmanÕs mind as they faced masses of Vietnamese civilians outside their protective base perimeters for the first time. Could we trust them not to shoot? Could they trust us not to drop them off in a detention camp? Truces never last, but life changes a bit for all the people involved while they are happening. Sometimes wars are suspended and fighting stops for a while. A holiday that both sides recognize might do it, as happened in the Christmas truce during World War I. Weather might do it, too, as it did in Vietnam in October 1970. The Òtyphoon truceÓ was just as real, and the war stopped for three days in northern I Corps--that area bordering the demilitarized zone separating South Vietnam from the North. The unofficial Òtyphoon truceÓ came because first, Super Typhoon Joan arrived, devastating all the coastal lowlands in I Corps and further up into North Vietnam. Then, less than a week later came Super Typhoon Kate. Kate hit the same area with renewed fury, leaving the entire countryside under water and the people there faced with both war and natural disaster at the same time. No one but the Americans, the foreign warriors fighting throughout the country, had the resources to help the people who lived in the lowlands, and so they did. For the men who took their helicopters out into the unending rain it really made little difference. Perhaps no one would shoot at them for a while, but the everyday dangers they faced remained, magnified by the low clouds and poor visibility. The crews got just as tired, maybe more so, than on normal missions. None of that really mattered. The aircrews of the 101st Airborne went out to help anyway, because rescuing people was now their mission. In this book we see how for a brief period during an otherwise vicious war, saving life took precedence over bloody conflict.

The rocket-firing Typhoon fighter played a pivotal role in the Allies' success in the air and on the ground in World War II, from the Normandy beachhead to the Battle of the Bulge and the final struggle for Germany. In this lively, dramatic account of aerial combat, Norman Franks describes what it was really like to fly at low level and attack trains, ships, and tanks; to fire lethal high-explosive rockets into radar or V-1 sites; or to roll over at 12,000 feet and then roar down into an inferno of flak to dive-bomb an enemy position. --Book Jacket.

At dawn on Sunday December 7, 1941, Japan devasted the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While war had already been raging in Europe and in Asia for several years, this sudden typhoon-like attack drew the United States into the most disruptive and wasteful cataclysm of human history--the Second World War. Most history books speak to the battles and historical figures pivotal to the outcome of the war, yet there were also ordinary people--both civilian and uniformed--who were propelled out of their comfort zones by unforeseen events and adventures during this long, complicated war. Typhoon at Dawn, Surviving WWII in the Pacific is a historical novel that unleashes an eclectic cast of characters who, tired of being constantly overlooked in World War II histories, finally have a chance to speak. Interconnecting a cast of civilian men and women, naval and military officers, Pacific Islanders and other nationalities with the activities of real historical figures, author Antwyn Price's extensive research provides a compelling, personal view of the struggles and irrevocably changed lives of the men and women in the Asia-Pacific region before, during, and after the war. Covering both the Nimitz and MacArthur campaigns from 1941 to 1946, Typhoon at Dawn charts the Pacific war's progress from Canton Island to Sydney; from Pearl Harbor to Guam; from Espiritu Santo and Nouméa to Guadalcanal and Bougainville; from New Guinea to the Philippines, and from Iwo Jima and Peleliu to Okinawa and Tokyo. Anyone curious about the Pacific War, whether familiar or not with the Far East region, will be able to stitch the events together so that the geography, the peoples, the logistics, and the strategies can be more easily understood. Reading this book is a great way to envision what grandpa did in the Pacific war, for example.

"This book is the first volume in a trilogy that will offer a more complete account of the Pacific War than any previously published. While keeping a focus on the decade leading up to Pearl Harbor, Storm Clouds Over the Pacific goes back centuries to examine the origins of enmity between Japan and China and trace the deep animosities that drove the immensely destructive war in the Asia Pacific, exploring the love-hate relationship between East Asia's two oldest civilizations, conditioned by shifting geopolitical winds." -- Back cover.

Micronesians often liken the Pacific War to a typhoon, one that swept away their former lives and brought dramatic changes to their understandings of the world and their places in it. Whether they spent the war in bomb shelters, in sweet potato fields under the guns of Japanese soldiers, or in their homes on atolls sheltered from the war, Micronesians who survived those years know that their peoples passed through a major historical transformation. Yet Pacific War histories scarcely mention the Islanders across whose lands and seas the fighting waged. Memories of War sets out to the fill that historical gap by presenting the missing voices of Micronesians and by viewing those years from their perspectives. The focus is on Micronesian remembrances—the ritual commemorations, features of the landscape, stories, dances, and songs that keep their memories of the conflict alive. The inclusion of numerous and extensive interviews and songs is an important feature of this book, allowing Micronesians to speak for themselves about their experiences. In addition, they also reveal distinctively Micronesian cultural memories of war. Memories of War preserves powerful and poignant memories for Micronesians; it also demonstrates to students of history and culture the extent to which cultural practices and values shape the remembrance of personal experience.
