There are few topics connected with Biblical interpretation, which seem to be more in need of re-investigation. The old opinions have gone out of vogue, without being replaced by any better, or indeed by any other system, so that the whole subject has been long in a most unsettled state. This would be no great evil if typology were merely a matter of curious speculation; but embracing as it does some of the most difficult and interesting questions of interpretation, its perversion or neglect cannot fail to be attended by the most pernicious consequences. Under these impressions, which have long been forming, in this book the difficulties of the subject are distinctly recognized and fairly appreciated. The author is acquainted with the history of his subject. .He does not come to the discussion of it, with a few ex parte notions gathered from some recent writer. He knows not only where the difficulty lies, but what attempts have heretofore been made for its removal. This is volume one out of two.

In 1938-39 Leonhard Goppelt finished his doctoral dissertation at Erlangen entitled "Typos: Die typologische Deutung des Alten Testaments im Neuen." The lasting value of his work was evidenced in 1969 when this dissertation was reprinted, with an appendix on "Apocalypticism and Typology in Paul." Goppelt's work has maintained its significance because it deals with biblical hermeneutics -- the study of the methodology of biblical interpretation -- a subject of renewed interest in the last few years. In his search for a normative hermeneutics, Goppelt appeals to the New Testament's interpretation of the Old Testament as a guide. He offers "a study of the interpretation of Scripture that is characteristic of the New Testament" in order to provide a standard guide for interpreting the Bible today. The focal question for Goppelt is how the Old Testament and Jesus Christ are related, and Goppelt's answer to this question is found in how the New Testament interprets the Old Testament -- typologically. Goppelt begins with a brief survey of the various definitions of typology to determine how it is distinguished from allegory, with which it is often confused. After this introductory chapter, Goppelt divides his work into three parts: Typology in Late Judaism, Typology in the New Testament, and Apocalypticism and Typology in Paul. In his survey of late Judaism, Goppelt examines both Palestinian and Hellenistic Judaism to determine the place of typology in their literatures. Turning to the New Testament, Goppelt looks first at the portrayal of Jesus Christ in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts. Elements of this portrayal are Jesus as the Prophet, as the Son of David and Lord, and as the Son of Man. Goppelt finds each of these characterizations typologically related to the Old Testament. Similarly, in his next chapter on the church as portrayed in the Synoptics and Acts, Goppelt finds a number of typological relationships between the people of God in the Old Testament and the church in the New Testament. Goppelt next examines the Pauline epistles for Paul's use of Scripture in general and for his view of Christ and the church. Goppelt here appends brief treatments on 1 and 2 Peter and Jude. In following chapters Goppelt deals with Hebrews, the Gospel of John, and finally apocalypticism and typology in Paul. Here he also examines traditional approaches to the relationship between the Old Testament and the New, the origin and legitimacy of the typological approach, and the relationship between typology and the historical-critical method.

Typology is a fascinating subject that can lead to many hours of intriguing study and open up crucial areas of Christian living - but if you are not careful to keep the rules you may go far astray. The major rule is that types are meant to amplify doctrine, not to originate it. Scofield, in his Reference Bible, gives us wise advice: "Nothing may be dogmatically asserted to be a type without explicit NT authority. All types not so authenticated must be recognised as having the authority of analogy (likeness or similarity), or spiritual congruity (agreement or harmony) merely." A type may be a person, an object, an event or even an institution. God in his wisdom has arranged for some of these persons, objects, events and institutions to prefigure some meaning for us which can open up a wealth of deeper understanding of the Spirit - led life. Be very careful though not to read too much into a life, such as Abraham's. Parts of his life do indeed bring out eternal type truths but other events in his life have no spiritual significance. This volume is a combined effort on the part of Barry and Ken Chant. It is to be hoped that from this book you will gain a desire to delve even more deeply into the pages of the Old Testament to discover for yourself more wonderful types not fully developed here. These will strengthen your faith in God's foresight as he watched over the OT writers.

An Intertextual Commentary on Romans is an exhaustive treatment of the hundreds of Old Testament citations, allusions, and echoes embedded in Paul’s most famous epistle. As many scholars have acknowledged, to understand Paul’s engagement with Israel’s Scriptures is to understand Romans. Despite this acknowledgment, there is a dearth of reference works in which the primary focus is how the Old Testament impacts Paul’s argument from Romans 1:1 to 16:27. This four-volume commentary aims to provide just such a reference. The interplay between Romans and its vast sea of Old Testament pre-texts produces unstated points of resonance that illuminate Paul’s rhetorical argument from the letter’s opening to its closing doxology. Volume 1 examines the Old Testament pre-texts in Romans 1:1–4:25. Although the citations of Habakkuk 2:4 and Genesis 15:6 in this section of the letter often dominate intertextual discussions, several other Old Testament pre-texts, though often overlooked, support the intertextual subtext of the letter and thereby illuminate various features of Paul’s argument. In this commentary, each of these pre-texts is examined from a variety of perspectives. The overarching aim of the commentary is to provide scholars, interpreters, and students with verse by verse analysis of how Israel’s Scriptures impact almost every clause of Paul’s most famous letter.
