The Do 217 had a much larger bomb load capacity and had considerably greater range than the Do 17, which it replaced in frontline service from mid to late 1941. Although initially used simply as a bomber, later variants were developed to allow the Do 217 to undertake the precision maritime strike role. In order to perform the latter mission, the Do 217 was modified to launch glide bombs – units employing these pioneering weapons enjoyed some success in the Mediterranean from the autumn of 1943. During the course of these operations the Do 217 became the first aircraft in military aviation history to deploy a precision-guided bomb in combat in the form of the 'Fritz X' radio-guided, free-fall weapon, which sank the Italian battleship Roma shortly after Italy capitulated in September 1943. The Do 217 served on all fronts, and was often used on anti-shipping strikes during the Battle of the Atlantic and against the Allied invasion fleet at Normandy. This versatile aircraft was also converted into a nightfighter, seeing action in the Defense of the Reich through to war's end. This highly illustrated study explores the design and development of the Do 217 and chronicles its use in the frontline as a strategic bomber, launch platform for first generation precision weapons, reconnaissance aircraft and nightfighter, among others.

Political and Military Statements in Support of the Thousands of Merchant Mariners Including Those We Honor in This Book Braving the Wartime Seas “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy . . .” (September 30, 1943, dedication of USMMA campus) President Franklin D. Roosevelt “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill “This is a hundredth gone. Too damned many of these fine lads gone. Wish there was more we could do to minimize losses.” Captain Richard R. McNulty, June 16, 1943 Note on report of death of a Cadet-Midshipman “They have brought us our lifeblood and they had paid for it with some of their own . . . they have delivered their cargoes to us who needed them so badly. In war it is performance that counts.” Quotes from Douglas MacArthur, General of the U.S. Army “Yours was the first front on every ocean, and without you, no Army and Navy can survive . . . one of the vital teams participating will be recognized as the merchant seamen in dungarees . . . we of the Navy will salute you with a final ‘Well done’.” Admiral Harold R. Stark, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe “Our operations would not have been possible without the strong support of our Merchant Marine. These gallant officers and men maintained a bridge of ships across the Pacific, and bore their share of the Japanese attacks while unloading on distant islands where the struggle was still intense and the issue not yet decided.” Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Navy, Chief of Naval Operations Braving the Wartime Seas is the final book of the American Maritime History Project, a private nonprofit foundation. The quotations were drawn from www.usmm.org. Front cover was designed by Marek Mutch, Bay Village, OH.

Among other major navies, that of the United States put armed naval landing parties ashore during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although done primarily to protect American interests, they also safeguarded international communities against the "savage hordes" of "uncivilized" nations. Specially designed light field guns carried aboard gunboats and larger warships sometimes supported the bluejackets and marines, customarily when larger parties more likely to face sharp actions went ashore. Most American naval landings of the nineteenth century took place in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, whereas the following century saw landings against larger and otherwise civilized nations such as Mexico and Russia. The last of these landings were made in conjunction with the Allied assaults on North Africa in November 1942. The first purpose-built landing guns, the bronze Dahlgren muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers, saw extensive deployment during the Civil War, and postwar in Korea. The US Navy's very first steel breechloading guns were landing pieces. Five different marks of 3-inch breechloading guns and several guns of other calibers followed in successive decades, serving for varying periods. The history and characteristics of these landing guns are chronicled.
