'It's a joy to island-hop through the book. After wowing the world with Sixty Degrees North, Tallack's second book is shaped by the same, clear, sharp prose and keen curiosity. Packed full of intelligent musings on everything from religion to astronomy, alchemy to the occult' - National Geographic Traveller 'This has been a vintage year for books about cartography: Malachy Tallack gave us The Un-Discovered Islands - a swashbuckling romp through 20 islands of the imagination, some of which featured on sea charts for centuries before being proven not to exist' - Scotland on Sunday 'Malachy Tallack is an engaging and fluent writer of essential kindliness' - John MacLeod, Scottish Review of Books 'Tallack teases all this out with great wit and subtlety' - Scotsman 'This is a splendid and wistful book' - Stuart Kelly, Spectator 'One of the best new travel books' - Guardian 'This is a book to cherish and to dip in and out of when time allows' - Lovereading In this new edition, beautifully illustrated with original full-colour maps, are two dozen islands once believed to be real but no longer found on modern maps. These phantom islands are the product of imagination, deception and human error: an archipelago of ex-isles and forgotten lands. From the well-known story of Atlantis to more obscure tales from around the globe, from ancient history right up to the present day, this is an atlas of legend and wonder.

This volume explores phenomena which come under the heading of epistemic modalities and evidentiality in more or less well-known languages (Germanic, Romance, Balto-Slavic, Hungarian, Tibetan, Lakandon and Yucatec Maya, Arwak-Chibchan Kogi and Ika). It reveals cross-linguistic variations in the structuring of these vast fields of enquiry and clearly demonstrates the relevance and interplay of multiple factors involved in the analysis of these two conceptual domains. Although the contributions present diverging descriptive traditions, they are nonetheless within the broad domain of functional-typological linguistics and give access to distinct yet comparable approaches. They all converge around a number of key issues: modal verbs; the relationship between epistemic modality and evidentiality; the relationship of modal notions with some tense and aspect notions; the notions of (inter)subjectivity, commitment and (dis)engagement; the prosodic variation of modal adverbs, the diachronic connections between negation and evidential markers, the connection with mirativity. The volume is of interest to linguists and advanced graduate students working in general and theoretical linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, cognition, and typology.

Forget about rockets to Mars – the future of space science lies with the search for exoplanets Twenty years ago, the search for planets outside the Solar System was the preserve of science-fiction writers. Now it's one of the fastest-growing fields in astronomy, with thousands of exoplanets discovered to date, and the number rising fast. These new-found worlds are more alien than anything in fiction. Planets larger than Jupiter with years lasting a week; others with two suns lighting their skies, or with no sun at all. Planets with diamond mantles supporting oceans of tar; possible Earth-sized worlds with split hemispheres of perpetual day and night; waterworlds drowning under global oceans and volcanic lava planets awash with seas of magma. The discovery of this diversity is just the beginning. There is a whole galaxy of possibilities. The Planet Factory tells the story of these exoplanets. What can we learn about these faraway surface environments and planetary atmospheres? And do the results hint at the tantalising possibility of alien life?

A captivating modern-day fantasy filled with intrigue, mythology, magical objects, and special abilities. Jo Visuri's adventurous tale will sweep you away to mystical Auor Island - where nothing is quite as it seems! A remote island. Old secrets. And a cascade of unintended consequences. Long ago, four clans from earth's four corners were given special abilities to help save humanity from oblivion. For generations, their descendants have lived in hidden communities and occasionally intermingled with regular humans-leading to whispers of unforeseen consequences. Now, for unknown purposes, one Clan desperately seeks the rumored, undiscovered offspring. In the heart of a northern archipelago, Elin Bodil leads a perfectly ordinary, happy life on Auor Island with her family. When, through accident and circumstance, she meets both a motorcycle-driving stranger and the new mysterious boy next door, Elin's world is turned upside down. As Elin is drawn into a brewing supernatural conflict-with her two unusual acquaintances on opposite sides, she must decipher who to trust while unearthing her island's secrets and those buried deep within herself. But when the search for answers triggers the Clan's sinister schemes, Elin and her companions will have to confront far bigger and deadlier secrets than they ever imagined. And they'll need much more than themselves to survive. Told from the perspective of Elin and her two unusual acquaintances, the imaginative first-in-series tale blends myth, magic, adventure, science fiction, and fantasy with a touch of romance. Delighting readers of all ages, The Undiscovered Descendants is perfect for fans of Rick Riordan, Kerstin Gier, and Maggie Stiefvater!
