Excerpt from The Unfortified Boundary: A Diary of the First Survey of the Canadian Boundary Line From St. Regis to the Lake of the Woods Vergennes, but Sparks, unconsciously illustrating the principle that researchers are always in danger of finding what they are looking for, jumped to the conclusion that he had found the lost red-line Map, which Franklin had marked for Vergennes on December 6, 1782. Whether or not he was justified in this conclusion, it is certain that this Sparks red-line Map followed the British rather than the American claim.4 As Franklin is known to have demanded both Canada and Nova Scotia, in his preliminary talks with Sir Richard Oswald before his fellow commissioners arrived, one is inclined to doubt the likelihood of his having sent Vergennes a map following England's claims. "Exiles in Indian Country weaves together the biographies of three men who cast their fortunes with the Western fur trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. John Tanner was a 'white Indian' who was taken captive and raised by Ottawa, and lived among the Ottawa and Ojibwa for thirty years, hunting across the northern forests and plains of present-day Ontario, Manitoba, and northern Minnesota. Dr. John McLoughlin fled the law in Quebec at the age of eighteen to work for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Lake Superior region during its two decades of war with the North West Company. The period between the American Revolution and the middle nineteenth century dramatically changed New York State and the Iroquois. Upstate metropolises—Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo—were founded and soon witnessed a phenomenal growth, making New York State one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. This development led to the displacement of the Iroquois. Initially, state officials attempted to force the Indians west. In his book, Laurence M. Hauptman shows how state transportation interests, land speculating companies, and national defense policies worked to undermine the Iroquois. When forced removal of the Indians failed, Albany officials pushed for jurisdiction over the Indians, including attempts to tax them. Hauptman goes beyond simply recounting the tragedy that befell the Indians in New York. He includes memoirs and letters of gazetteers, travelers’ accounts, tribal records, personal correspondence, and Indian petitions to Albany and Washington—eloquent documents that reveal a rich culture in crisis.
