Occult groups of one hew or other have stood the test of time for many years. The calamitous Thirty Years war in 17th century Europe wrought untold havoc, and many refugees from this disaster had looked to England for safety. Among their number were several members of various Rosicrucian groups. One group in particular had brought with them a remarkable chalice, which had once belonged to the Knight Templars. This chalice, had through various channels, come into the ownership of one particular group. Their legends told, that it had been created from the skull of John the Baptist after his beheading on the orders of Herod, and it had over the years been used in various occult rituals. It was this reference which the Templars used to describe the head which they claimed granted them their wealth and power. The chalice had in time been hidden in a forlorn church on the Welsh Border, and where it had laid for centuries, unknown and quietly forgotten. But during 19th century renovations it was rediscovered, and the reverend Warner, being perturbed by it presence, called upon the help of his friend and fellow cleric, William Ayton for help with it. With others, Ayton re-entombed the chalice and bound the spirit of the church to guard it until it's time had come. When searching through a Glastonbury book shop, two travellers, Sam and Jenny, find an account that had been written about the chalice which aroused their interest and they decide to go upon their own 'Graal Quest.' However unknown to them, they were about to become involved with two modern day occult orders, both having links to the original owners of the chalice, and were now seeking the graal. Caradog Ap Tewdur, a man who brooks no interference with his will, is eaten with his desperation to claim the chalice for himself and is hunting everywhere for it. Having summoned, in the old Templar church at Garway in Herefordshire, the shade of Jacque De Molay, the last Grand Master of the Temple, he picks up several clues in his search. When Goetic spirits are evoked to hunt the treasure down and the ultimate consequences are not what everyone expected, Sam and Jenny quickly realise that the occult is more than a New-Age experience, as they soon become out of their depth with the magic and it's practitioners as they stop at nothing to fulfil their destiny......

Three things warned the wizard’s apprentice that something was wrong: first the deep-trodden prints of iron-shod hooves along the forest path—he sensed them through his boots before stooping to feel them out in the dark; next, the eerie drone of a bee unnaturally abroad by night; and finally, a faint aromatic odor of burning.

The Holy Grail written by Richard Barber and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-02 with History categories.

The Holy Grail is an image familiar to us all as an almost unattainable, infinitely desirable goal. The idea has passed into everyday speech and the legends behind it are as current in today's culture as they have ever been. And yet the Grail has no real religious meaning and is nowhere mentioned in the Bible. What is the truth behind this elusive symbol? Here, Barber traces the history of the stories surrounding the Holy Grail. He describes how through a long series of imaginative transformations, the grail has moved from the sphere of romance to religion, and in twentieth century popular culture has become an emblem of mysticism and man's highest aspirations, intimately linked with the central ritual of the Christian faith. The search for the grail has always been described as a quest; in this book, Barber goes on his own quest, brilliantly exploring the richness of the Holy Grail's cultural impact. Barber traces the history of legends surrounding the Holy Grail, from Chretien de Troyes' great romances to the popular bestsellers of the late twentieth century.

"[A]n eminently readable text, done clearly and accurately . . . it gives as good an idea as a translation can of the complexity and subtlety of Chrétien's originals. . . . The text is provided by a translator who understands the spirit as well as the letter of the original and renders it with style. . . . [T]his translation should attract a wide audience of students and Arthurian enthusiasts." —Speculum "[A] significant contribution to the field of medieval studies [and] a pleasure to read." —Library Journal "These are, above all, stories of courtly love and of knights tested in their devotion to chivalric ideals (with passion and duty often at odds); but they are also thrilling wonder stories of giants, wild men, tame lions, razor-sharp bridges and visits to the Other World." —Washington Post Book World "This tastefully produced book will be the standard general translation for many years to come." —Choice This new translation brings to life for a new generation of readers the stories of King Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere, Gawain, Perceval, Yvain, and the other "knights and ladies" of Chrétien de Troyes' famous romances.

A fine collection...an excellent introduction to Chrétien's world and work. Highly recommended. CHOICE Chrétien de Troyes is arguably the creator of Arthurian romance, and it is on his work that later writers have based their interpretations. This book offers both crucial information on, and a comprehensive coverage of, all aspectsof the work of Chrétien de Troyes - the literary and historical background, patronage, his influence on other writers, manuscripts and editions of his work and, at the heart of the volume, major essays on the themes, techniques and artistic achievements in each of his compositions; the contributions, all from leading experts in Chrétien and related studies, have been commissioned especially for this volume and are designed to remain accessible to studentswhile also addressing specialists in Arthurian studies and Chrétien de Troyes. They reflect the most current critical and scholarly views on one of the greatest of medieval authors. CONTRIBUTORS: JOHN W. BALDWIN, JUNEHALL MCCASH, LAURENCE HARF-LANCNER, NORRIS J. Focusing on works by some of the major literary figures of the period, Faletra argues that the legendary history of Britain that flourished in medieval chronicles and Arthurian romances traces its origins to twelfth-century Anglo-Norman colonial interest in Wales and the Welsh.
