Christopher Dawson concludes that the period of the fourth to the eleventh centuries, commonly known as the Dark Ages, is not a barren prelude to the creative energy of the medieval world. Instead, he argues that it is better described as "ages of dawn" for it is in this rich and confused period that the complex and creative interaction of the Roman empire, the Christian Church, the classical tradition, and barbarous societies provided the foundation for a vital, unified European culture. In an age of fragmentation and the emergence of new nationalist forces, Dawson argued that if "our civilization is to survive, it is essential that it should develop a common European consciousness and sense of historic and organic unity." But he was clear that this unity required sources deeper and more complex than the political and economic movements on which so many had come to depend, and he insisted, prophetically, that Europe would need to recover its Christian roots if it was to survive. In a time of cultural and political ambiguity, The making of Europe is an indispensable work for understanding not only the rich sources but also the contemporary implications of the very idea of Europe.

Excerpt from The Making of Europe: An Introduction to the History of European Unity The art of the catacombs is the first outward manifestation of Christian culture, and shows in a remarkable Way how the external forms of the old roman-hellenistic culture were assimilated and modified by the new Spiritual forces. Early Christian art took over the traditional commonplaces of the Hellenistic house - decorator, and infused them with a pro found Spiritual meaning. The subjects are mere generalised types or symbolsf - a fish, a clove, or a figure borrowed from heathen mythology - the value of which consists entirely in their hieratic and mystical significance to the initiated. Of these figures the most popular is that of a woman in an attitude of prayer - the orans-a figure that symbolised at once the soul of the deceased, the freed and enlightened Spirit of man, and also the Virgin Church, the Bride of the Spirit. The patterns of unity and division that define Europe as a historical region have been discussed in many seminal works, but the complex set of questions behind its domains and divisions merits a more sustained debate. The disappearance of the cold war, the enlargement of the European Union, and core issues of historical sociology all require an exploration of the structures and boundaries of historical formations, as well as the question of European unity. This volume tackles the topic of the divisions that have shaped European history head-on, as leading scholars in the field negotiate such issues as regional identity, geographical boundaries, divisional labeling, and post–cold war European unity.
