The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to what is believed to be the original atonement teaching of first century Christianity. It has a close relationship of the two traditional modern theological positions of today, but varies greatly in the “end result” or final destiny of humanity. A thorough view of the subject is presented with sufficient scriptural quotations and detailed commentaries. Emphasis is placed upon those concepts of immediate value to the student, pastors, theologians and other persons who are dissatisfied with contemporary doctrinal creeds and who are still seeking the truth. This book brings to light the positive “good news” of the message as trumpeted by the angel of the Lord and leaves the negative verses for another time in the unveiling of Christ in these last days. Basic topics are explained sequentially and developed in order of importance. Many verses have been given under each section to show the proper understanding to each particular biblical concept. The result is a reorganization of Christian teachings and a reinterpretation of atonement doctrine in support of the universal reconciliation of all mankind and the whole of creation.

The Global Bible Commentary invites its users to expand their horizon by reading the Bible with scholars from all over the world and from different religious persuasions. These scholars have approaches and concerns that often are poles apart. Yet they share two basic convictions: biblical interpretation always matters; and reading the Bible “with others” is highly rewarding. Each of the short commentaries of the Global Bible Commentary is a readily accessible guide for reading a biblical book. Written for undergraduate and seminary students and their teachers, as well as for pastors, priests, and Adult Sunday School classes, it introduces the users to the main features of the biblical book and its content. Yet each short commentary does more. It also brings us a precious gift, namely the opportunity of reading this biblical book as if for the first time. By making explicit the specific context and the concerns from which she/he reads the Bible, the scholar points out to us the significance of aspects of the biblical text that we simply took for granted or overlooked. If any book demonstrates the value of cultural criticism and the importance of particularity in interpretation, this is it! Scholars from diverse social locations in every continent bring their distinctive context to bear on the act of interpreting. In so doing, they shed eye-opening light on the biblical texts. The resulting critical dialogue with the Bible exposes the oppressive as well as the liberating dynamics of the texts while at the same time showing how the Bible might address the social, political, cultural, and economic dynamics of our world today. This collection can change the way you read the Bible—scholars and students, clergy and laity alike. -David Rhoads, Professor of New Testament, Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago, IL Contributors: Daniel Patte, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA. Luke, the author of this book, traveled back to Israel with Paul on the Third Missionary Journey. It is felt by many commentators that he spent two years in the land while Paul was in prison. Luke must have used this special time to do much of his careful research on the gospel materials. We can guess that he made a point to interview leaders like Peter, James, and other principals in the early church. The author of this commentary also spent much time in Israel. For sixteen years the author lived and ministered in the Land of Israel. As a result this commentary has an "Israel flavor" reflecting that experience. Few commentaries can come from this perspective. The author has utilized a great number of quotes, ancient and modern, from the best commentaries and other sources of information. With this single commentary it may be less likely that the reader will need to consult stacks of other materials in preparation for Bible study teaching or preaching.

Can an orthodox Christian, committed to the historic faith of the Church and the authority of the Bible, be a universalist? Is it possible to believe that salvation is found only by grace, through faith in Christ, and yet to maintain that in the end all people will be saved? Can one believe passionately in mission if one does not think that anyone will be lost forever? Could universalism be consistent with the teachings of the Bible? In The Evangelical Universalist the author argues that the answer is ‘yes!’ to all of these questions. Weaving together philosophical, theological, and biblical considerations, he seeks to show that being a committed universalist is consistent with the central teachings of the biblical texts and of historic Christian theology.

Most one-volume Bible commentaries focus on standard scholarly issues, answering questions such as, who wrote the book? who was addressed? and how is the book structured? In contrast, this is the first one-volume commentary to emphasize theological questions: what does each biblical book say about God? how does the book describe God and portray God's actions? and who is God in these biblical books? This volume meets the need for a resource that puts the best of scholarship in conversation with the theological claims of the biblical text.
