Excerpt from The University Magazine, 1907, Vol. 6 This question, in some form, is Often a puzzle to per sons who seem to accept without examination the postulate which underlies it. That is, that the West is not essentially Canadian in the same sense as the East is. Before one attempts to Show this erroneous, he may find it convenient to remark on another assumption which Canadians have been long ignoring in their political action. That is the assumption that Canadians are not distinctively Canadian, not differentiated, as other civilized communities are from one another, partly by natural conditions, and partly by reaction of the institutions devised in accommodat ing themselves to the natural. Any political system which persists effectively does so by assimilating, or moulding, those who use it, and so confirms them more and more in their separate course. Excerpt from North Carolina University Magazine, 1907, Vol. 24 It is worth while to recall in this connection the names of a few of the University's sons who have been moving spirits in this educational revival - Alderman; Aycock, mciver, Joyner, Noble, Graham, Winston, and a host of others, whose work, though perhaps not so con spicious, has, nevertheless, been effective. When one examines this list of names and then recalls that all these men of thought and action were students here together (except Prof. Graham who had gone out a few years before, and Dr. Winston who was then a professor here), one is almost inclined to believe that even in their stu dent days they must have conspired against illiteracy and pledged themselves in united effort to free the state from its blasting bondage. Whether or not such a pledge was then made it matters not; the world knows the princely service they have rendered, and it knows, too, that the state owes them a debt of gratitude it can never repay. Excerpt from University of North Carolina Magazine, Vol. 38: October, 1907; New Series, Vol. 25 In the preparation of this bibliography the principle of selection has been to include the verse publications (from leather to leaflet) of all native and naturalized North Carolinians; that is, of those who were born in the State or as residents did their work within its borders. Though this work has cost a good deal of research at odd times during the past fifteen years, I am fully aware that it is still incomplete and incorrect. Very likely other names and titles ought to appear here; probably one or two of these should be stricken out; and certainly the data below need to be largely supplemented. This list is therefore published tentatively, the present pur pose being to secure as well as to convey information. Hence corrections and additions will be not only heartily welcome, but they are especially and earnestly requested. This is by far the completest bibliography yet printed and I wish by the further aid of literary friends to approximate fullness and accuracy. Excerpt from The University Magazine: 1912 It may seem paradoxical to suggest of a doctrine essentially impatient of the absolute that it bids fair to become the chief bulwark of an absolutism the more tyrannical because it is false. Yet a democracy forgetting freedom and a philosophy careless of principles do, in fact, go hand in hand together. Nowhere better than in politics could the pragmatic creed be applied; and nowhere does it become more immediately clear that pragmatism has no creed. In this it is the motto of democracy in action, which is abandoning more and more not only creeds as creeds but even the very creed that brought it into being. In doing so democracy threatens to entrammel men for a time more effectively than ever they were trammelled in the past, through the very optimism of its crude practicality; seeking to achieve in one generation and by extraneous rules the blessings which only the long discipline of character can ever bring to the world. Lovers of liberty, then, if they would serve her now, must see that a philosophy without a standard, a wisdom that will not criticize, a doctrine that will not lead, is the greatest foe of all they have to fight. An irreverent critic once remarked that doubtless we should all like to be pragmatists if only we knew what we should be if we were pragmatists. I am sure that it would be very easy for any accommodating person to find out that he was on the whole a pragmatist. But with a full reserve of my right to be accommodating on some other occasion, the present purpose requires a sterner frame of mind. Pragmatism is a big belief quite satisfactory to those only whose belief is still bigger. It is, I take it, the doctrine that an idea is true if it works. Empires Of Print written by Patrick Scott Belk and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the publishing industries in Britain and the United States underwent dramatic expansions and reorganization that brought about an increased traffic in books and periodicals around the world. Focusing on adventure fiction published from 1899 to 1919, Patrick Scott Belk looks at authors such as Joseph Conrad, H.G. Wells, Conan Doyle, and John Buchan to explore how writers of popular fiction engaged with foreign markets and readers through periodical publishing. Belk argues that popular fiction, particularly the adventure genre, developed in ways that directly correlate with authors’ experiences, and shows that popular genres of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emerged as one way of marketing their literary works to expanding audiences of readers worldwide. Despite an over-determined print space altered by the rise of new kinds of consumers and transformations of accepted habits of reading, publishing, and writing, the changes in British and American publishing at the turn of the twentieth century inspired an exciting new period of literary invention and experimentation in the adventure genre, and the greater part of that invention and experimentation was happening in the magazines.
