Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 65: August, 1908; Self-Help at the University I came to Chapel Hill with It took most of this to pay my entrance fees, room rent for the first month, and buy books that I needed in my college courses. I secured a position as waiter at Commons and in this way paid my board. I found it necessary to be absent from the University during November in order to deliver fruit trees which I had sold during the summer. I returned on December 1st and by hard work managed to pass all my examinations. During the summer vaca tion I again sold fruit trees, thus making it necessary to be absent two or three weeks each fall in order to deliver the trees. Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 87: December 1910 David H. Dolley, Professor of Bacteriology and Pathology since 1905. Dr. Dolley was a capable teacher and by his investigations was adding to the reputation of the University for scholarly work. Collett Leventhorpe The English Confederate written by J. Timothy Cole and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-28 with History categories.

This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

The 30th North Carolina Infantry In The Civil War written by William Thomas Venner and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-12 with History categories.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, the men of the 30th North Carolina rushed to join the regiment, proclaiming, "we will whip the Yankees, or give them a right to a small part of our soil--say 2 feet by 6 feet." Once the Tar Heels experienced combat, their attitudes changed. One rifleman recorded: "We came to a Yankee field hospital ... we moved piles of arms, feet, hands." By 1865, the unit's survivors reflected on their experiences, wondering "when and if I return home--will I be able to fit in?" Drawing on letters, journals, memoirs and personnel records, this history follows the civilian-soldiers from their mustering-in to the war's final moments at Appomattox. The 30th North Carolina had the distinction of firing at Abraham Lincoln on July 12, 1864, as the president stood upon the ramparts of Ft. Stevens outside Washington, D.C., and firing the last regimental volley before the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia.

The Confederate Surrender At Greensboro written by Robert M. Dunkerly and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-18 with History categories.

Drawing upon more than 200 eyewitness accounts, this work chronicles the largest troop surrender of the Civil War, at Greensboro--one of the most confusing, frustrating and tension-filled events of the war. Long overshadowed by Appomattox, this event was equally important in ending the war, and is much more representative of how most Americans in 1865 experienced the conflict's end. The book includes a timeline, organizational charts, an order of battle, maps, and illustrations. It also uses many unpublished accounts and provides information on Confederate campsites that have been lost to development and neglect.
