The economic impact of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) on Dane County and the State was studied during 1983-1984. The overall economic impact of the university consisted of direct spending impact of purchases, taxes, and donations, plus the indirect impact of that money circulating through the community to be respent on other purchases and payments. The direct impact of five expenditure categories (construction and spending by the university, employees, students, and visitors) was an estimated $628.5 million a year, of which $533.2 million went to local businesses. Considering the circulation of that money, the estimate for the total direct and indirect impact of the university on the county economy was $1.41 billion a year. It was estimated that about 3,000 public sector jobs and more than 9,500 private sector jobs were the result of the university's direct spending, while at least 5,300 private jobs were due to indirect effects. In addition, the university employed 21,677 regular and student employees. Appendices include: information on benefits to the state provided by UW-Madison hospital and clinics; survey questionnaires for faculty/employees, students, football fans, parents, and visitors, and a four-page selected bibliography. Postsecondary educational institutions in the United States are facing increasing financial stress and waning public support. Unless these trends can be changed, higher education can be expected to stagnate. What, if anything, can be done? As a starting point, advocates of higher education need to more fully recognize the issues associated with the economic mission of higher education and how this mission gets translated into individual student gains, regional growth, and social equity. This requires an understanding of the relationship between the outcomes of higher education and measures of economic productivity and well-being. The Rise of the Entrepreneurial State charts the development of state and local government initiatives to influence the market and strengthen economic development policies. This trend marked a decisive break from governments' traditionally small role in the affairs of private industry that defined the relationship between the public and private sector for the first half of the twentieth century. The turn to state and local government intervention signaled a change in subnational politics that, in many ways, transcended partisan politics, regional distinctions ,and racial alliances. Eisinger's meticulous research uncovers state and local governments' transition from supply-side to demand-side strategies of market creation.
