British film historians reassess the films, stars, genres, and directors omitted from conventional accounts of the decade and evaluate its forgotten and recently rediscovered films. They consider audiences, producer Julius Hagen and his independent Twickenham Film Studios, how MGM deal with the Films Acts, the shocker and musical genres, class and gender issues, national identity, and other dimensions. In the 1930s there were close to a billion annual admissions to the cinema in Britain and it was by far the most popular paid-for leisure activity. This book is an exploration of that popularity. John Sedgwick has developed the POPSTAT index, a methodology based on exhibition records which allows identification of the most popular films and the leading stars of the period, and provides a series of tables which will serve as standard points of reference for all scholars and specialists working in the field of 1930s cinema. The book establishes similarities and differences between national and regional tastes through detailed case study analysis of cinemagoing in Bolton and Brighton, and offers an analysis of genre development. It also reveals that although Hollywood continued to dominate the British market, films emanating from British studios proved markedly popular with domestic audiences.

A stimulating overview of the intellectual arguments and critical debates involved in the study of British and Irish cinemas British and Irish film studies have expanded in scope and depth in recent years, prompting a growing number of critical debates on how these cinemas are analysed, contextualized, and understood. A Companion to British and Irish Cinema addresses arguments surrounding film historiography, methods of textual analysis, critical judgments, and the social and economic contexts that are central to the study of these cinemas. Twenty-nine essays from many of the most prominent writers in the field examine how British and Irish cinema have been discussed, the concepts and methods used to interpret and understand British and Irish films, and the defining issues and debates at the heart of British and Irish cinema studies. Offering a broad scope of commentary, the Companion explores historical, cultural and aesthetic questions that encompass over a century of British and Irish film studies—from the early years of the silent era to the present-day. Divided into five sections, the Companion discusses the social and cultural forces shaping British and Irish cinema during different periods, the contexts in which films are produced, distributed and exhibited, the genres and styles that have been adopted by British and Irish films, issues of representation and identity, and debates on concepts of national cinema at a time when ideas of what constitutes both ‘British’ and ‘Irish’ cinema are under question. A Companion to British and Irish Cinema is a valuable and timely resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of film, media, and cultural studies, and for those seeking contemporary commentary on the cinemas of Britain and Ireland.

Where were the women of the so-called `Auden Generation'? During this era of rapidly changing gender roles, social values and world politics, women produced a rich variety of poetry. But until now their work has largely been lost or ignored: in Women's Poetry of the 1930s , Jane Dowson finally redresses the balance and recovers women's place in the literary history of the interwar years. This comprehensive and beautifully edited collection of richly varied poems includes: * Previously uncollected poems by authors such as Winifred Holtby and Naomi Mitchison * Poems which are now out of print, such as those by Vita Sackville-West and Frances Cornford * Poems previously neglected by poets including Ann Ridler and Sylvia Townsend Warner * An extensive critical introduction and individual biographies of each poet This unique anthology sheds a whole new light on women's place in this era of British literary history and demands a reassessment of our understanding of 1930s poetry. This will be invaluable resource and a treasured volume for students, scholars and poetry enthusiasts alike.

Berenice Abbott was one of the most versatile photographic artists of the twentieth century and her work has been published and publicized since the beginning of her career in 1925. She is best known for her Paris portraits of the 1920s and her documentation of New York City in the 1930s but, like most great artists, Abbott's reputation has rested on a small portion of her life's work. For every time one of her most famous photographs has been published there are many others that could have served the same purpose but were not used because they are less well known. In Abbott's case there is an unusually large body of unknown work because during the most potentially creative time of her life, the circumstances of her existence were very complicated, largely due to lack of work and income, particularly between the years 1929 to 35 and 1940 to 1959. 'The Unknown Abbott' is a very ambitious project that will present hundreds of outstanding Abbott images for the first time.

Despite the stock market crash of October 1929, thousands of theatregoers still flocked to the Great White Way throughout the country’s darkest years. In keeping with the Depression and the events leading up to World War II, 1930s Broadway was distinguished by numerous political revues and musicals, including three by George Gershwin (Strike Up the Band, Of Thee I Sing, and Let ’Em Eat Cake). The decade also saw the last musicals by Gershwin, Jerome Kern, and Vincent Youmans; found Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in full flower; and introduced both Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen’s music to Broadway. In The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz examines in detail every musical that opened on Broadway from 1930 through 1939. This book discusses the era’s major successes, notorious failures, and musicals that closed during their pre-Broadway tryouts. It includes such shows as Anything Goes, As Thousands Cheer, Babes in Arms, The Boys from Syracuse, The Cradle Will Rock, The Green Pastures, Hellzapoppin, Hot Mikado, Porgy and Bess, Roberta, and various editions of Ziegfeld Follies. Each entry contains the following information: Plot summary Cast members Names of all important personnel, including writers, composers, directors, choreographers, producers, and musical directors Opening and closing dates Number of performances Critical commentary Musical numbers and the performers who introduced the songs Production data, including information about tryouts Source material Details about London and other foreign productions Besides separate entries for each production, the book offers numerous appendixes, including a discography, filmography, and list of published scripts, as well as lists of black-themed and Jewish-themed productions. This comprehensive book contains a wealth of information and provides a comprehensive view of each show. The Complete Book of 1930s Broadway Musicals will be of use to scholars, historians, and casual fans of one of the greatest decades in musical theatre history.

Engaged to be married, John and Ruth Carpenter were aged 26 and 21 years respectively when they left their sheltered backgrounds in 1931 and set sail for China to fulfil their missionary calling. They could never have imagined what lay in store for them over the next seven years, a time of great turmoil in China's history, but they faced each challenge with remarkable courage and sense of purpose, confident that God would guide, protect and provide for them. That assurance would be put to the test as they had to adapt to a different culture and difficult climate, often living in primitive conditions and having to face danger, illness, disease and discouragement. However, they remained steadfast throughout, sustained by their strong unwavering faith and sense of mission. This is a unique collection of over 500 letters written by John and Ruth to their families in England 7,000 miles away and long before the days of modern forms of communication. The letters give an enthralling first-hand, day-to-day account of their life as it unfolded and are beautifully written, informative and interesting both historically and culturally. They are frank, amusing, poignant and at times heart-rending and paint vivid pictures of the world around them. The reader travels with them along a truly emotional journey, sharing their pleasures, anguish, fun and laughter, uncertainties, dangers and joys, and cannot fail to become totally immersed in the world they inhabit. The journal is compiled and edited by Jean Wemyss-Gorman, daughter of John and Ruth, on the 90th anniversary of their sailing to China.

Female solo aerialists of the 1920s and early 1930s were internationally popular performers in the largest live performance mass entertainment of the period in the UK and USA. Yet these aerialists and this period in circus history have been largely forgotten despite the iconic image of ‘the’ female aerialist still flaring in the popular imagination. Kate Holmes uses insights gained as a practitioner to reconstruct in detail the British and American performances and public personae of key stars such as Lillian Leitzel, Luisita Leers, and the Flying Codonas, revealing what is performed and implicit in today’s practice. Using a wealth of original sources, this book considers the forgotten stars whose legacy of the cultural image of the female aerialist echoes. Locating performers within wider cultural histories of sport, glamour, and gender, this book asks important questions about their stardom, including: Why were female aerialists so alluring when their muscularity challenged conservative ideals of femininity and how did they participate in change? What was it about their movements and the spaces they performed in that activated such strong audience responses? This book is vital reading for students and practitioners of aerial performance, circus, gender, popular performance, and performance studies.
