As advances in science unlock the secrets of our DNA and reveal the inner workings of the human brain, Time-Life Books explores the fascinating findings that are shedding new light on the criminal mind. What role does birth order, divorce, media influence, and other societal pressures play in how criminals are formed? By examining some of the most notorious criminals from history and our modern era — from Al Capone and Charles Manson to Scott Peterson and Dzohkhar Tsarnaev — and their characteristics, the nature of their deeds and the possible formation of their pathologies. Readers will explore the roots of crime, going on the streets to meet the authorities who deal with criminals on a daily basis and have developed unique insights into the criminal mentality. Packed with infographics, sidebars and lists, this book is a compelling yet easy introduction to the new age of crime and punishment — a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how crimes begin and how we can help end them.

Samenow, Ph.D. “Utterly compelling reading, full of raw insight into the dark mind of the criminal.”—John Douglas, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Mind Hunter Long-held myths defining the sources of and remedies for crime are shattered in this groundbreaking book—and a chilling profile of today’s criminal emerges. In 1984, Stanton Samenow changed the way we think about the workings of the criminal mind, with a revolutionary approach to “habilitation.” In 2014, armed with thirty years of additional knowledge and insight, Samenow explored the subject afresh, explaining criminals’ thought patterns in the new millennium, such as those that lead to domestic violence, internet victimization, and terrorism. Since then the arenas of criminal behavior have expanded even further, demanding this newly updated version, which includes an exploration of social media as a vehicle for criminal conduct, new pharmaceutical influences and the impact of the opioid crisis, recent genetic and biological research into whether some people are “wired” to become criminals, new findings on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy, and a fresh take on criminal justice reform. Throughout, we learn from Samenow’s five decades of experience how truly vital it is to know who the criminals are and how they think. If equipped with that crucial understanding, we can reach reasonable, compassionate, and effective solutions. From expert witness Dr. Stanton E. Samenow, a brilliant, no-nonsense profile of the criminal mind, updated to include new influences and effective methods for dealing with hardened criminals

Excerpt from The Criminal Mind It is my purpose to state here, in the simplest and clearest form, the sum of our most recently-acquired and most certain information respecting the structure and the action of the brain of Man, in order that we may ascertain to what extent these new ideas - I mean those which we may regard as finally accepted, and henceforth incontestable - are calculated to modify the received and current ideas upon crime, the criminal, and penal legislation. For thirty years physiologists and physicians have been engaged, even more assiduously than lawyers and philosophers, in ploughing that old field of human knowledge anew, in turning-up the dry and dusty soil so as to bring the deep mould to the surface, more fresh and fruitful. Why should it be surprising that a doctor should again put in his word. I do not, however, disguise from myself that the task is not a grateful one. The first half of Pride, the Criminal Mind, and Crime Prevention provides the reader with summaries of common crimes processed in the criminal courts of California. The crimes range from graffiti tagging to first degree murder. The second part of this work turns to youngsters, as well as to students of criminology and the criminal justice system, to offer a format for behaving ethically and avoiding criminality. As a didactic tool, it opens the doors to instructors for teaching through role playing sessions of personal life experiences which expose false pride and other human frailties. The present study may be best suited as a textbook companion and reader for college majors of sociology, psychology, and the criminal justice system. It offers an analysis after each summary of the criminal cases presented which addresses the perpetrators mentality, motivation, and rationalization for committing crimes. As the title suggests, pride is considered crucial in the criminal mind and can often be found as a catalyst, justification, and even a right to criminal behavior.

Conviction written by Oliver Rollins and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-13 with Social Science categories.

Exposing ethical dilemmas of neuroscientific research on violence, this book warns against a dystopian future in which behavior is narrowly defined in relation to our biological makeup. Biological explanations for violence have existed for centuries, as has criticism of this kind of deterministic science, haunted by a long history of horrific abuse. Yet, this program has endured because of, and not despite, its notorious legacy. Today's scientists are well beyond the nature versus nurture debate. Instead, they contend that scientific progress has led to a nature and nurture, biological and social, stance that allows it to avoid the pitfalls of the past. In Conviction Oliver Rollins cautions against this optimism, arguing that the way these categories are imagined belies a dangerous continuity between past and present. The late 1980s ushered in a wave of techno-scientific advancements in the genetic and brain sciences. Rollins focuses on an often-ignored strand of research, the neuroscience of violence, which he argues became a key player in the larger conversation about the biological origins of criminal, violent behavior. Using powerful technologies, neuroscientists have rationalized an idea of the violent brain—or a brain that bears the marks of predisposition toward "dangerousness." Drawing on extensive analysis of neurobiological research, interviews with neuroscientists, and participant observation, Rollins finds that this construct of the brain is ill-equipped to deal with the complexities and contradictions of the social world, much less the ethical implications of informing treatment based on such simplified definitions. Rollins warns of the potentially devastating effects of a science that promises to "predict" criminals before the crime is committed, in a world that already understands violence largely through a politic of inequality.
