Originally published in 1981 and then as a second edition, revised and updated in 1983 and now with a new Preface by Ian Kennedy, this is a hard-hitting and penetrating investigation behind the façade of late 20th Century medical thinking. Based on his controversial series of Reith Lectures, Ian Kennedy attacks issues and problems which are central to today’s debate over the provision of health care. He asks why people are willing to give up so much power over their own lives to the medical profession and discusses why the Health Service has become an illness service. He also questions whether doctors are adequately trained to deal with ethical problems.

Unmasking Health Management written by Mark Learmonth and has been published by Nova Biomedical Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Health services administration categories.

Although governments believe that the key to efficient health services lies in organisations run by inspiring leaders who stimulate the most efficient forms of management, many people working in health services, including managers, and an increasing number of academics, are discomforted by such a belief system. This books aims to provide a language in which such discomfort may be articulated. Its objectives are to nurture scepticism about the benefits of management, to debunk the notion that management is merely a technical device to promote efficiency, and to reveal the oppressiveness of managerialism. It thus challenges mainstream management texts, which seek unthinkingly to guide people in the impossible task of good management. Contributors, many of whom were experienced health managers before becoming academics, are drawn from across the social sciences. They illustrate how beliefs in 'grand practices' such as economics or evidence-based medicine are misplaced, and explore the potential of an ethical management of health services. They investigate the experiences of managers doing management and reveal that it is impossible for managers to do management. This book should be of interest to graduate students of public sector management, to lecturers and researchers in public sector management and to public sector managers themselves -- or those working with them.

Towards A Rhetoric Of Medical Law written by John Harrington and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-13 with Law categories.

Challenging the dominant account of medical law as normatively and conceptually subordinate to medical or bioethics, this book provides an innovative account of medical law as a rhetorical practice. The aspiration to provide a firm grounding for medical law in ethical principle has not yet been realized. Rather, legal doctrine is marked, if anything, by increasingly evident contradiction and indeterminacy that are symptomatic of the inherently contingent nature of legal argumentation. Against the idea of a timeless, placeless ethics as the master discipline for medical law, this book demonstrates how judicial and academic reasoning seek to manage this contingency, through the deployment of rhetorical strategies, persuasive to concrete audiences within specific historical, cultural and political contexts. Informed by social and legal theory, cultural history and literary criticism, John Harrington’s careful reading of key judicial decisions, legislative proposals and academic interventions offers an original, and significant, understanding of medical law.

Medical Treatment Of Children And The Law written by Jo Bridgeman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-19 with Law categories.

The high profile cases of Charlie Gard, Alfie Evans, and Tafida Raqeeb raised the questions as to why the state intrudes into the exercise of parental responsibility concerning the medical treatment of children and why parents may not be permitted to decide what is in the best interests of their child. This book answers these questions. It argues for a reframing of the law concerned with the medical treatment of children to one which better protects the welfare of the individual child, within the context of family relationships recognising the duties which professionals have to care for the child and that the welfare of children is a matter of public interest, protected through the intervention of the state. This book undertakes a rigorous critical analysis of the case law concerned with the provision of medical treatment to children since the first reported cases over forty years ago. It argues that understanding of the cases only as disputes over the best interests of the child, and judicial resolution thereof, fails to recognise professional duties and public responsibilities for the welfare and protection of children that exist alongside parental responsibilities and which justify public, or state, intervention into family life and parental decision-making. Whilst the principles and approach of the court established in the early cases endure, the nature and balance of these responsibilities to children in their care need to be understood in the changing social, legal, and political context in which they are exercised and enforced by the court. The book will be a valuable resource for academics, students, and practitioners of Medical Law, Healthcare Law, Family Law, Social Work, Medicine, Nursing, and Bioethics.
