Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, January-June 1915, Vol. 3 Will the readers of The Unpopular be generous enough to accept the disavowal of arrogance in the title of this essay? They may be assured that, if the writer makes any pretensions to philosophy, it is only on the very modest basis of the Horatian command to wonder at nothing - nil admirari. Sitting in his study and conning the daily reports of the war and some of the innumerable opinions it has called into type, going about among his friends and listening with stopped mouth to their clamorous comments, such a man might well be impressed by the wide-spread surprise and consternation over the grim reality thrust upon us, and might be saddened by his inability to share in those feelings. He would be humiliated at times by the reproach of pessimism, in answer to his occasional apologetic protests; and so would try to flatter himself with the hope that his lack of wonder was philosophical, and that perhaps others were not so much amazed as, in their desire to appear humane, their words seemed to imply. For, after all, what are the facts? Just one hundred years ago Europe was coming out of the desolating madness of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, exhausted and apparently chastened. But a century is a long time to those who believe in the acceleration of Progress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, January-June 1914, Vol. 1 We call it new. Yet there is nothing new under the sun - which statement, like most proverbs, is but a half truth. The world has always been full of irrepressible conflicts, and will be as long as life is worth living in it - and longer. There was one between centrifugal and centripetal force, at the very start (assuming a start), when the star dust began to whirl, and all that have been since have been but differentiations from it. Old ones are between sex-instinct and monogamy, between license and order, or call it liberty and authority if you please, or freedom and slavery. Sex-instinct, license, liberty, freedom are centrifugal; monogamy, order, authority, even slavery, are centripetal. The conflict between freedom and slavery gave rise to the phrase The Irrepressible Conflict. It came through Seward at the time of the Civil War. That Irrepressible Conflict has been succeeded by one which we have called new, but which, though in a comparatively quiescent state, is older than Jack Cade or even than Cleon. It took its start in the fact that in human evolution, from the pithecanthropes up, some of us have not got along as fast as others. Primitively, the conflict began by those in front enslaving those behind - the minority enslaving the majority. But that built Athens; and with it, civilization - as we regard it. (This starting point is selected somewhat arbitrarily, but most starting points must be.) It now looks, though, as if the boot were getting on the other leg - the majority trying to enslave the minority; and if they do before humanity is much farther evolved, what Athens started will stop. Excerpt from The Unpopular Review, January-June 1918, Vol. 9 It has long been the custom, and very especially with Mr. Wilson, to make diplomatic appointments among men associated with literature: in fact, the following ambassadors and ministers, present or recent, are members of the Authors' Club: Messrs. Egan (Denmark), Gerard (Germany), Hardy (Persia, Greece, Rumania and Servia, Switzerland and Spain), Hill (Germany), W. H. Page (England), T. N. Page (Italy), Penneld (Austria), Porter (France), Van Dyke (Holland), White (Germany) and Straus (Turkey). Of ambassadors to the United States, Lord Bryce and Monsieur Jusserand are also members of the Club. Of these, Messrs. Gerard, Hardy, Hill, Straus and Van Dyke happening to be at home, their fellow-members of the Club gave them a dinner on Thursday, November 1st, Professor Giddings presiding. The speeches began with the usual after dinner persiflage and perhaps a touch of diplomatic reticence, but the tone soon changed and they expressed much thought and experience regarding the attitude on the present great questions of the countries where the diplomats had served; and they were expressed as they could have been only to a very exceptionally stimulating audience. It would hardly be extravagant to call the occasion a historic one. But the speeches were very inadequately reported in the daily press, and on account of lateness, some of them were not reported at all. In consequence many of those present have thought that they should be preserved and disseminated, and we have secured the privilege of presenting them to our readers. For obvious reasons we forego our rule of contributors' anonymity until the next number. While preparing the speeches for the press, the authors have been invited to modify them freely with reference to subsequent reflections or events.
