Excerpt from The Unrest of Women Try to be such women as their moth ers were, or shape themselves by some new pattern the outlines of which are not yet clear. So it seems rather a hard time for girls; but the trouble is hardly a trouble at all, for what chiefly makes the disturbance is enlargement of opportunity. Girls have a wider choice than they used to have. Besides the old-time call ings of dressmaking, millinery, teach ing school and getting married, they can - let's see, let's see - work in fac tories, laundries, stores; be cashiers; be stenographers or typewriters; be trained nurses or doctors; be tele phone girls, indispensable office workers, actresses, writers, librarians, social workers, deans and presidents of colleges; or go into some other business not done at home. Originally published in 1913, this book offers a fascinating look at the state of the women's movement in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Martin argues that despite the gains that had been made, much work remained to be done in terms of securing women's full participation and rights in society. A century later, this book remains relevant as debates over women's equality continue to play out in the public sphere. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Excerpt from Some Aspects of the Woman's Movement The choice had to be made between a book by one author and a book by several. A composite book was decided upon, because adequate know ledge oi the matters dealt with was thought to be even more important than coherence; but it will be seen that the ideas which run through the book do, as a matter of fact, make it a coherent whole, in spite of varieties of style and approach. The book was to have been published in the autumn Of 1914, but on the outbreak of war publication was temporarily postponed. During the past year many theories have been tested by stern realities the place of woman in the life of the nation and in public service has been more firmly established the consideration of her point of view in politics, and particularly in international politics, has entered upon a new phase: much bitterness has been allayed a new Opportunity for unprejudiced consideration of her strength and her weakness has come about. At the same time a considerable amount of ethical unrest and of moral uncertainty has been revealed, and the need for the fuller understanding and teaching of positive and compelling moral ideals is clear. This book is an attempt to estimate the actualthe Woman's Movement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: A Short History of a Great Movement The Reform Movement was agitating the whole country at this period, and political excitement led to political riots, burning of buildings, and general orgies of massacre and destruction. The Government of the day had their share in the blunders and stupidities which led to these crimes, and in none were these qualities more conspicuous than in the riot at Manchester, which came to be known as the Peterloo Massacre in August 1819, in which six people were killed and about thirty seriously injured. Excerpt from The Modern Woman's Rights Movement: A Historical Survey The first edition of this book appeared in 1905. That edition is exhausted, an evidence of the great present-day interest in the woman's rights movement. This new edition takes into account the developments since 1905, contains the recent statistical data, and gives an account of the woman's suffrage movement which has been especially characteristic of these later years. Wherever the statistical data have been left unchanged, either there have been no new censuses or the new results were not available. The facts contained in this volume do not require of me any prefatory observations on the theoretical justification of the woman's rights movement.1 From the remotest time man has tried to rule her who ought to be comrade and colleague to him. By virtue of the law of might he generally succeeded Every protest against this law of might was a woman's rights movement. There is still much uncertainty about the role of nineteenth-century British women in social and political protest. As politics was a man’s world virtually all official accounts and statistics of popular protest deal only with the men involved. It is well known that women participated in food riots and mobilised support for Chartism, and as the dramatic changes in the economy during this period greatly increased the demand for women’s labour, this stimulated their widespread involvement in political and social agitation, particularly the parliamentary reform movement of 1819. First published in 1982, this book provides a descriptive account of the part played by women – mainly working class women – in a variety of social and political activities that can broadly be categorised as protest. It establishes the basic outlines and offers an interpretation of the course of events.

Excerpt from Common Sense About Women Lord melbourne, speaking of the fine ladies in London who were fond Of talking about their ail ments, used to complain that they gave him too much Of their natural history. There are a good many writers - usually men - Who, with the best intentions, discuss woman as if she had merely a physical organization, and as if she existed only for one Object, the production and rearing of children. Against this some protest may be well made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
